I have never understood why anyone would bother with this. All the wonderful pictures in Antelope Canyon have already been taken, thousands of times over. I hate photography tours where everyone is jostling to get the right position for their shot. If I want to take pictures of a particular part of the world I either go with my wife or my wife and another couple. In the latter case we hire a guide/driver and he stops wherever we ask so I can take pictures. We did this for Burma and for Iran. Sometimes I will take a small group non-photography tour and get what pictures I can. Not ideal but still better than competing with other "serious" photographers for "the shot."

Probably impossible to get a unique shot so just buy the postcards, scan and amaze your friends - kidding.

I could not disagree more. both with the article and with berchman. I went to the upper canyon on a regular tour rather than the photo tour, the guide was very accommodating and helpful with the photography, and went out of his way to explain and help with everything. The price was $35, I believe, and I got every shot I wanted, without interruption. It sounds to me as if the photo tour is a bad deal--the only thing I couldn't do was take a tripod, and I didn't need one anyway. Better yet, I got to experience the canyon firsthand. I got a lot of beautiful photos OF MY OWN, and better yet was the experience of actually being there. I can relate my experiences to not only the photos I took, but also to those of others that I see. There is no better experience than seeing something in person. I see photos of other places that I haven't been and think how much better I would enjoy them if I could relate my own experiences. I could never completely understand the real beauty of Antelope Canyon photos if I hadn't experienced it for myself. If I get the opportunity to go back, I will do so, simply to soak in the awe and beauty again. I went there to take photos, but they soon became secondary to the experience.

I agree that there's nothing like experiencing a place in person. The first time I went to India I skipped the Taj Mahal because I had seen so many photos of it. But the second time, I decided to go to the Taj and it blew me away with its beauty in person. So it's probably worthwhile visiting Antelope Canyon just to be there, never mind the photos.

The only two times I have been there were in 1977. I went with Herbert Muskett, a Navajo friend of mine that I worked with in the Kerr-McGee Churchrock Uranium Mine. We are both geologists. He told me about the place and asked if I wanted to go. Anyway, we were the only two there. He shot 15+ rolls of 36 Kodachrome as did I. I don't think the way it is now that I want to go back. Even though those slides were lost when I moved from Gallup, NM to Corpus Christi, TX along with my mineral collection.

I need to call Herbert and see what's up. I haven't talked to him in a year.
