Sony Lens Comparison

Yes, I know this is a flawed test, as some will point out, but it's still a comparison of three lenses on my Sony A6000. I had the 16-50mm and 55-210 Sony lens. I recently bought a Tamron 18-200mm, and I wanted to see how all three compared. I have no regrets about buying the Tamron, and that will probably be my "always" lens.

Each shot was taken on a tripod from the same location. They were shot in raw (Sony ARW) and given the same processing, via Sync, in LR and exported as JPEGs. Each shot was focused on the large rock.

I've done a bit of yard work since these were taken, so it looks a bit better. I built that "Michael's Place" in 1980, based on huts we saw at Knott's Berry Farm when we were in CA the same year, when my son was just 4. It's on its last legs.

I'll post more later.

EDIT: This is interesting. These all much sharper in Lightroom.

Jerry - I think these are mislabeled.

I use and like the 16-50 kit lens, but my favorite so far is the Sony 50/1.8, especially for low light sports shooting. I have adapted a pentax mount Rokinon 85/1.4 (brilliant for portraits). Most trecently purchased a Samyang 12/2 in e mount which is amazing. Point is I love my a6000. Also liking using manual focus with the peaking and focus magnifier features. It almost makes it too easy. lol
I was pleasantly surprised by your tammy 18-200 shot. Nice.

Knottsberry Farm, I've been there. It's nicknamed the poor man's Disneyland here. More relaxed too. The Sony a6000 camera has become a very popular camera on this forum. A camera that won't die, just like the Nikon D7100. Nice shot with your new Tamron 18-200mm lens at 18mm.

Could be. Let me check. I took about three dozen pictures, but I kept track of the specs. I first tried shooting flowers - not a good idea on a windy day.

Agh! I don't have the pics on this computer. Yes, the last one is definitely not 18mm, more like 200mm.

I'm amazed at how soft they look on UHH, when both LR and Irfanview show them being very sharp. I did this to justify the Tamron purchase, and I'm satisfied with it.

I think you could have picked a better subject for comparison shooting.

What's the matter? You don't like rocks?

I just wanted to see if there was big difference in sharpness, and there isn't. As I said, the flowers, even more beautiful than that rock, were moving too much in the wind. When the rocks start blowing around, I stay indoors.

Flowers? Sorry Jerry - all I see are weeds. Apparently gardening is not your second hobby.

I'm Mr. Death to plants. If they can't survive on their own, they die. Across the yard, there's a huge bush that just started flowering - beautiful!

My wife is the gardener in our house. Over the weekend I finally picked up the courage to tell her that I had bought that 'camera I always wanted' - (an A7Rii). She never asked how much. Then she said she had a confession too - she had spent a 'lot' of money on plants. I didn't ask her how much - I decided to quit while I was ahead - I hope !!

I bet your Sony cost a bit more than her plants.

Thanks for noticing. The third shot was taken with the 55-210mm lens, at 55mm. I'll check the others and re-check before I post more.

I think you still have made an error Jerry. How about Sony 55-210 @ 210 (330 35 mm equivalent ) since it is the most zoomed of all your shots.

Back to the drawing board! I've been out all day, so I'll have to take a look at the originals. Regardless what the numbers are, I'm satisfied with the sharpness, even though they're not sharp on this site.

EDIT: Yeah, those are the numbers straight from the EXIF, as shown in Irfanview. I'll look at this again tomorrow.
