I was only 6 years old but I remember scenes like that in LIFE Magazine. We lived in Los Angeles CA and had a couple of aircraft and submarine scares (real or imaged) threatening our Pacific Coast. From our house we could see the anti-aircraft shells bursting in the air over the Long Beach area when there was an imagined Japanese air raid. That turned out to be a false alarm but it sure got the trigger happy air defense people going. It has been challenged that it ever occurred but I know it did because I saw it.
