I was just sitting there ready to pack it in because there was very little activity. Heard a whoosh to my right and there he was sitting on a tree limb 10 feet or so from me. All alone, no sign of a parent around. He stayed for a good half hour and then went on passed me to another tree fall further along the shoreline. I left him undisturbed, hoping that he wasn't just lost. I'll check again in the morning to see how he got along.
Such a great series. I love birds!
Fantastic photos! You made the most of a special moment between curious juvie (heron?) and patient photographer
These are great shots - really sharp - but who is it? A heron?
Wow, what a golden opportunity! That's the kind of company I would enjoy having.
Great job on these. Do you know what kind of bird this is? Looks like some type of Heron.
Thanks folks. My guess is a great blue heron. The mystery is, where did it come from?? I watch this pond almost daily and have not seen the adult heron that was there all winter in a month and a half. If it had nested somewhere on the pond I would have seen it fishing. The ponds not that big. This little bird was flying, but just barely, and only had a few of the fluffy pin feathers here and there, some of the blue has started on his head. I'm surely hoping that he's ready to be out on his own.
Fantastic shots of a very curious and extremely cute bird!! Looks like he's trying to figure you out!!

Lovely images. He looks very curious. I'm wondering what bird he is also. Definitely looks like some sort of heron. I'm hoping someone will know and share it with the rest of us.

thanks Mike. Yes he was very interested in what I was doing. I'm pretty sure it is a young Great Blue Heron. That is what we usually see on the ponds.

Super series, very inquisitive bird.
Nice close portraits of this juvenile bird!I can't positively identify it either.
What I believe you have in this wonderful set is a first year Yellow Crowned Night Heron. Nick work.
