Its not hard to see the difference...Canon 100mm F2.8....Tripod Shot was mirror locked up and remote with AF...Hand held is view finder auto focus and finger roll...Distance was only about ten feet and I was sitting down.

Am I getting too old to hold a camera steady or is there that much difference? Is this why a lot of my photos are not in focus because I don't use a tripod much?

Would be good to know the shutter speed before making judgements on motion blur. General rule of thumb is 1/focal length as your minimum shutter speed when handholding. 100mm lens should not be hand held anything longer than 1/100th of a second. I contend that crop sensor camera users should use the full frame equivalent focal length as a guide. So a 100mm lens on Nikon crop sensor camera should be treated like a 150 in this regard.

What shutter speed were you using. I think the full is 2x the focal distance i.e.. 1/200 or faster.

Sorry Goofy we posted at the same time :)

. I do it all the time! 2x is better but not the way I learned it.

The tripod photo is a lot more clearer.

I included a multiplier for age :)
Actually, I was just guessing at what I thought I read.

A tripod shot if properly focused will always be sharper.

A tripod shot with mirror lock up will be even sharper.

Years ago we would do a test with students, hand held, tripod, tripod with mirror lock up all at 1/500 and there is a big difference . Sutle but different levels of sharpness.

That's way to slow to handhold, even for a younger person.

way too slow to even consider comparing. General rule was always the 100mm equals a min. of 100th of a second shutter. 300mm a min of a 300th of a second, 50mm a min of a 50th of a second etc. but here it is always a case of more is better. So at bear min a 100mm would be a 100th of a second but even better would be 250th etc. but don't even consider anything under a 50th ever unless you are using a 16mm and can hand hold rock steady.

Don't forget to turn off IS or VR on your lens when shooting from a tripod. It will improve the photo as well.

does not apply to all lenses. The higher end Nikon lenses have a built in detection to know when it is on a tripod such as the 70-200mm f2.8 VR and VR II so you do not need to turn off VR.
