Finally, getting some color with DSS

Some shots from Jan 15. Used a m4/3 camera that is modded for full spectrum along with a Samyang 135mm f2. I stacked 24 images. At ISO 1600, and at f2.0, my histogram was at 50% with only an 8 sec exposure.

But the big difference is that I boosted the color saturation a lot and found some color. Did all my stretching and adjustment in Photoshop. And it has me encouraged.

Adding to this a shot of the California Nebula. Again using a modified m4/3 camera which is full spectrum and shooting with the Samyang 135 f2.0 lens. This is a stack of 29 30sec images processed through DSS. The right filter would have helped, but now I am at least seeing the red nebula. I had tried this before and had pathetic red, but with my change in DSS usage, the red can be seen. Of course, longer exposures would have helped bring out more of the nebula.

I love them both Jim H. It's amazing how much detail you where able to get out of 30sec exposures.

Actually, the 1st one is only 8 sec. And with that, the pixels did not saturate, thus, there was color to pull out.

The 2nd was 30 sec exposures, and the stars have less color, meaning that they saturated. But that is the price to pay to pull out a dim nebula. I tried the Heart Nebula too that night, and after stretching, and stretching, and stretching, could just begin to see a bit of the shape. But it is something like 18th magnitude, so using the 135mm f2 camera lens was not up to the task.

Redoing another stack with DSS. Shot this in Aug 2015 and the original stack had no color. This time, I was able to pull some color out of it. This is Deneb (near the middle) and The North American Nebula under it. This was done with a Sony A99 and a Minolta 100mm f2.8 Macro lens. This was a stack of 11. 30 sec each at ISO 800 and f2.8. Some uninteresting edges cropped off.

Nice! You have managed to pull quite a lot of detail from the outer edges without completely blowing out the core...

Good to see you online. You've been quiet lately.

Yes, I have been learning the art of stretching without blowing the highlights.

I know... I check the forum every day, but haven't had anything to post in so long. Health stuff... I took some photos of my church's new softball team in their first game this week, and it suddenly struck me that this is the first time I have picked up one of my cameras since last September...
