The VR version gets good reviews. I am considering one because it weighs half my 28-300.

I am not sure about the 7100 but I read somwhere it will work with my D5300 with a firmware update. That might also be true for the D7100.

Walmart has it for $200. Probably grey market but maybe worth it.

I called Nikon this afternoon. On the NikonUSA website it states:

Fully compatible models: D5500, D5300, D3400, D3300, D500 and later models.
Compatible models with limited functions: D5, D810 series, Df, D750, D7200, D7100, D5200.
Incompatible models: D4 series, D3 series, D2 series, D1 series, D800 series, D700, D610, D600, D300 series, D200, D100, D7000, D5100, D5000, D90, D80, D70 series, D3200, D3100, D3000, D60, D50, D40 series, film cameras.

So, your D5300 would work just fine with this lens.

I asked what “limited functions” means. The rep said that in order for this lens to work properly, my camera (D7100) would have to be sent in for a firmware update. Turnaround time 7-10 business days. I asked what would the update allow it to do? She said that it would allow controlling the aperture from the camera. I suppose that’s a good thing, wouldn’t you say?

I’m not sure I like the plastic lens mount, though. I DO like the faster AF (supposedly faster than any other similar lens). Still leaning towards the FX version of this or the Tamron.

The 28-300mm would be great, but it’s about the same cost as the 18-300mm f5.6. Not sure I want to do that at this time.

Why would you have to send your camera to Nikon for a firmware update? I have a D7100 and also interested in this lens.

That's what I was told, that it would have to be sent in. I should call them again and ask if it can just go to an authorized service center. There is one of these ten minutes from where I work.

I wonder why they can't put it in a regular firmware update? I guess I'll have to choose another lens.
Thanks for all the info.

After much consideration and question-asking, here on UHH, time is almost up for decision making.

Lastly, how does the Tamron 16-300 compare with the Nikon? It's $100 cheaper, compared to the f6.3, but if I got the Tamron, would I be sorry and wished I'd gotten the Nikon?

I have the Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 with VC and find it to be a remarkable lens for every day walk around use. I was a bit concerned about the 6.3 aperture setting, but it has not given me a problem since I generally shoot at f8 for landscapes anyway.

Look good to me. I find my Tamron 16-300 gives me nice crisp pictures too. I used a friend's Nikon 18-300, and didn't see any perceptible difference, other than the cost. Mine is a tad lighter, but nothing most people would notice. I'm happy with it, and plan on using it for my walk around lens.
