Full frame Stacked CMOS sensor with 24 mp able to shoot 20 frames per second.

Silent shutter, can shoot up to 1/32000 of a second with NO vibration!

693 AF points covering the entire frame!

20 frames per second with NO EVF black out!

New battery system with 2X times the capacity of current E mount batteries.

Available next month (pre-orders begin this friday) for $4500 US $5600 Canadian.

Sony also introducing a new 100-400mm G Master lens.

This camera is aimed DIRECTLY at the pro market... look out D4 and 1DXII!!

Sony is also expanding Sony Imaging Pro Support with 24/7 support, next day repair, and 2 walk-in centers in NY and LA. This will be in addition to new teams of professional support technologists who will be in the field.

Sounds like Sony is making a SERIOUS play for market dominance.

Uh, dude, it's the D5 now. lol

BTW, I guess this will be carving out serious sports shooters from the Canikon camps.

For me the camera is still front heavy with the 100-400 attached. I shoot BIF without a tripod and for me the balance is not there for me yet.

Thank goodness! A reason not to buy one.

My friend, good to hear from you! Hope you are well.

The camera has been in development for about 3.5 years. Pre-production copies have been in use since just before last summer's Olympics where several Sony Artisans Beta tested it during the Games.

I type that to say that the performance and features have been demonstrated in the field under actual conditions.

And unlike MOST new camera announcements, this is actually a roll-out with orders for new units possible this FRIDAY for delivery in June.

As for comparison with the A99II?

Well...

A99II is of course, an A mount camera using legacy Minolta/Konica Minolta/Sony AF lenses. The A99II has a higher resolution sensor (42 mp compared to the 24 of the A9), but a slower max frame rate (12 compared to 20fps) and limitation of 8 fps without blackout where the A9 can shoot 20 without blackout.

Both can be used as sports shooters... but the A9 has a much deeper buffer for both RAW and JPEG bursts.

Additionally, the A9 has an electronic shutter without the normal distortion; the A99II lacks an electronic shutter.

BOTH cameras offer class leading features, and "punch way out of their weight class".

And while the A99II could compete in limited ways with the Nikon D5 and Canon 1DXII, the A9 EXCEEDS their performance in EVERY respect and does so for SIGNIFICANTLY LESS MONEY.

Sony updates faster than my wife changes shoes. I am reluctant to buy cause next week it will be obsolete. That said I have the A77II and A99 and several Sony point and shoots.

MONSTER!!!

Looks like the combo of the A9 and new 100-400 GM will STILL be LESS than a new 1DXII body only, and considerably less than the D4.

It's a very small monster and looks more like it was designed for the ladies. I watched a video on it yesterday and with the 100-400mm lens the gentleman had a hard time holding onto the camera , very small space between lens and camera. Great for someone with small hands. Other then that it does look on paper so far to be a great advancement. Looking forward to some hands on testing by the various sites and further reports. Thanks for the info.

Maybe the future of telephoto will involve hermetically-sealed helium-filled lenses.

That's what happened to me with the RX 100 series. I eventually bought II, III, and IV. Then I gave up on them.

One advantage of the D7500 is the deeper grip on the right side. When you're holding a $4,500 camera, you want it to stay securely in your hands. I like the built-in grip of Nikon DSLRs.

EDIT: Some pictures. It looks like a tight fit on the right.

I thought this comment was funny. "The body will cost $4,500, which may sound like a lot but is actually pretty reasonable."

Watch Tony and Chelsea Northrop and Jason Lanier's YouTube videos on the new Sony A9. I have the A6000 and the A7 rll - and I love both. I agree - Sony is so innovative and is moving to the top of the full frame cameras. Mirrorless is the future - in my opinion.

How many cameras do we need? Do we have to own a bank to keep up with so many new cameras and lenses?
No more cameras for me.

Yes, this camera looks like a big step forward. If Nikon and Canon wait to enter the mirrorless camera market with some real cameras they will both be behind Sony in full frame camera sales within 2-3 years from now.

This new camera is obviously made to fight the Canon 1Dx and Nikon D5 and looks as it will do it very well. If reviews and comparison tests confirm that the specs are as good as indicated and focusing systems work fast and accurately this camera will have many advantages over the leading pro cameras from Nikon and Canon. And the pros will buy it if it is better for them then what the competitors offer. The pro market is all about results, not brands, so the best camera will easily make a lot of damage to competitors that are falling behind in technical comparison.

Maybe and maybe not. As long as someone has a lot of $ tied up in glass for either Nikon or Canon it's going to be a hard sell!

Why should any camera cost 2-4x what a computer costs.
I'm having none of it. It is all a master plan to rip off consumers with more and more "capabilities" that can be provided at lower costs.
The camera companies feel they need a line of 10 0r 20 cameras, and by segmenting features, they can drive up prices.
In the world of technology - which is what a camera has become - there is no justification for such a price.

It is a little like comparing a $10,000 bicycle to a car. Look at the technology and 10,000 parts in a cheap car, and look at that $10,000 Italian bicycle. It is still 2 bike tires, a carbon fiber frame, and some precision gears and breaks. Can there be any rational relationship between that $10,000 bike, and a cheap car that costs $16,000. It is absurd to think that any bike can cost that much when a car can be produced for not much more.

Same with cameras. Its an absurdity to think these prices are justified !
There is no camera that is worth $5,000. br br Wh... (show quote)

Why pay 2-4x what a computer costs? Well, as stated earlier, people will pay what they think a product is worth and a company will charge what the market will bear... but more to the central theme of your question is this; what does the price of a camera have to do with the price of a computer?

A digital camera is a computer that is portable and can take high quality photographic images... so the comparison is, well; not applicable.

Oh, and your analogy to bicycles is off too. WAY off. Don't believe me?

What was the purse for the winner of last year's Tour De France? Did a guy driving a car win it... or a guy on a bike?

In other words, people will buy and use whatever they need for a specific purpose... and if it costs MORE than something that WON'T do the job they need, I think they'll be OK with that.

Mine too.

But pro photojournalists buy new D5s and 1DXII's all the time, and when those models are superseded, they'll buy the successor too.

BTW, it's $4500 U.S.D.; that's 10% cheaper.

Well Bill, it took Sony 4 years to replace the A700 with the A77 and 4 more to replace the A77 with the A77II.

The A900 came 4 years before the A99, which was 4 years before the A99II.

If your weeks are 4 years long, then you are right about the A mounts.

E mounts on that scale would be replaced every few minutes though!!
