If you're carrying diapers + you should look at something I have begun to use instead of my Nikons. A Panasonic Lumix Travel DMC ZS50 shoots raw + jpeg, has a 30 x zoom, viewfinder and a Leica lens. I often get shots I would never have gotten with a bigger rig. Right now it's cheap because the DMC ZS60 has been released, without the Leica lens. Costco now selling this ZS50 for $229. I've had mine over a year and it's been flawless.

Any of the Sony RX100 series of camera's. My RX100 II has a HDR feature that allows the camera to combine up to 6 exposures for great low light photography. Produces two finished photos, one with more shadow detail than the other but both are acceptable. I have found this feature great for low light situations. Also does rear curtain flash for low light. You can also do manual exposure compensation and because you have an electronic viewfinder you can see the final shot before you take the shot.

The Leica you mention is obviously a good camera but the zoom range is low, the price is high and it doesn't shoot raw?

Hello, Take a read up on the Leica Dlux 6. I use it when I have to travel the way that you describe, it is extremely compact, but takes some great shots. The lens is very high quality and so the quality of pics is in my mind very good. But search a few reviews on line, and you will see some really positive comments. I tend to keep the ISO low and reviews seem to say the same thing.
I often use the camera around town because it is so easy to have in my pocket, take shots and then come back with another camera, but often I catch the shots I want with that camera.

If you have one baby you can rent a double stroller and carry the camera bag on the other seat. Take it from personal experience. After all, the bag is your baby too.

I bought a used Panasonic FZ-200 from another hog for my 2-week trip to Israel 11 months ago and I was very satisfied with it, considering the limited time I had to learn the controls. I got it because of baggage restrictions on the tour. It has a 25-600 optical zoom and, if it's set up correctly, has up to 4x digital. Quite useful for some of the shots I took, including a wall-hanger of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem (12x18 print mounted on foam board). the aperture is a constant f/2.8 wide and goes to f/8 (not the best, but it worked for what I needed). There are some good You-Tube videos on it's operation that I watched beforehand to get acquainted with it.

I was amazed at how many Fuji X Series cameras I saw when I went to Europe a few years ago.

Time then, my friend, for you to return to these shores and discover by how much these cameras have taken hold over here and on the continental mainland.

On the other hand ....... methinks you already know !

This is not a Nikon, but.... I bought a Canon SX710 HS two years ago to take to Disney. It will fit in your pocket, which means no standing in the security line to check a camera bag, it's light and easy to carry. Has an incredible zoom, yet will focus with in 2 inches of the lens. Has several auto features, is 20.2 Mp. In Epcot, I sat it on a concrete fence post at the English Pub and took a beautiful night shot of the Mexican Piramid on the other end of the lake.

I see we have a lot of Nikon fan. I got a Canon EOS630 many many years ago, but because of the lenses, I stayed with Canon. If I had bought a Sony or Nikon, I'd still be with them. Anyway to your point. When I absolutely am limited to one camera, I choose my backup camera 5D MkIII without the battery pack and a 24-70mm f2.8. No it doesn't fit in my pocket, but packing it in my case logic camera bag makes it easy to carry. Also for security reasons I carry it around the front of me and hide the camera bag until I need to take a shot. Worked well for me in Guatemala. Lost of good advice, but it's what works for you.

I have a Fuji XE1 and like the camera but it has a hard time focusing in low light. I'm looking to upgrade to a camera for travel that will take nice low light photos and use APS-C-sensor? Any suggestion.

I have an Olympus TG-4 that goes with me everywhere. 16 MP, f2.0, raw, excellent macro with focus stacking, waterproof. All it lacks is a longer zoom and a larger sensor, but that would increase its size and convenience substantially. Also, the lens does not move when zooming or focusing so I can hold it up to a telescope eyepiece and get decent telephoto shots (handy when park rangers are pointing out distant wildlife with a spotting scope)

Does your Canon shoot raw? The Reviews don't say.
