Yep a lot of work, but there were a lot of somewhat modern tools , I mean a level a hewing hatchet, a wooden plane. a flexible draw knife, the real art would be to do the whole job with a primitive hatchet.
Or even better with stone tools.

I have seen the work with stone tools back in Papua New Guinea when I was there in the early 70s.

Yes, a lot of work! The wife/mother must be glad to get them out of the house.

Cheers Beach, that canoe and paddle are incredibly beautiful pieces of functional sculpture! I have a winnowing trough I acquired as part payment for a bit of reproduction work I did for an antique dealer. It takes pride of place in the main room along with a PNG croc canoe/ bowl. 1.8 m x 500 mm x 200 mm or roughly, 5'10 x 20 in x 10 in.

The "Men's Debating Bench" in the second pic was a gift from a pal.

Heh, Heh, this sort of debate is one of the bread and butter topics on woodworking sites. The only thing that matters for me is the finished object.
Rihards Vidzickis could have used a chainsaw and power plane to rough out, then finish off with hand tools and the canoe wouldn't be any more or less beautiful.

Thanks Tex. Nice collection.
I picked up a few things in Papua New Guinea. Here are three pics. The bowl is useful for serving nuts. I also have several wooden mask, fish baskets, bows and arrows.
