My name is Mary. I was introduced into photography in my senior year in high school (graduated in 1996), and quickly fell in love with the freedom I felt while taking pictures. Photography as a hobby has been in my family for at least a 2 or 3 generations. Photography helps me see the beauty everywhere in the world, and helps me cope with my chronic migraine diagnosis.
I recently received a Nikon D5300 for my birthday. I'd been wanting one for a while, and am stoked to finally own one! I have been learning how to use it through trial and error, and through YouTube videos. So far so good. Up until I got my camera, I had been using my phone (Samsung galaxy note 4) for my photography. Thankfully the pictures came out fabulously. But now I have my camera, which take phenomenal photos, and a bunch of filters and a slave flash that I don't know how to use. So far the internet has failed me in my quest to learn. Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated.

Welcome to UHH Mary.
Some books that you may find helpful:
"David Busch's Nikon D5300 Guide to Digital SLR Photography" This book goes in to greater detail about your camera than the manual that came with it.
"Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.
"Understanding Flash Photography" by Brian Peterson.
"The Nikon Creative Lighting System" by Mike Hagen.
These books are available on Amazon.
Good luck and have fun.
Welcome and thanks for sharing. You are doing a good job so far. The members here suggested Brian Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure". I found it helped me a lot but I have a long way to go.
You will find a lot of valuable information here.
Good luck on your journey.
Thank you all for welcoming me and giving suggestions. I will definitely read all those books. I only want to improve. :)
Welcome! Your first picture is a stunner!
So,,,,,,,how do you focus on fire?
Your photos look very nice. Seems like you already have a pretty good handle on what you are doing.
Nice shots Mary and welcome to the forum.
I put my camera in manual mode, then just played with the aperture/shutter speed until I came to the desired effect. It took many many tries to get the final picture.
