My first name is Brenda. I love taking pictures, age 76 I have way too many albums. Pretty much a novice, but I do wish to purchase a new camera, not point and shoot, a DSLR. I really like my point and shoot Lumix. Which would be the better buy at this time as it will be my last one. I actually have a Nikon and Canon. Older of course. I wish to be able to change lenses. Why are folks so much into Nikon/Canon and not so much Lumix? I don't want to make a mistake here.

A Nikon will use more of the old glass than a Canon, but both take very good photos. As for a Lumix, I never used one. I started on a Honeywell Pentax and went to Nikon. And welcome to the forum.

Welcome aboard Brenda. You'll get a lot of advice here. I think that the Nikon/Canon people just drank too much of the Koolaid. See which camera fits your hands the best, and don't forget to check out Sony. A camera that you can't hold comfortably won't be stable in your hands and will never give you the satisfaction you're looking for. Then worry about the lenses and accessories. Good luck and happy shooting.

I like the "drank too much Koolaid" - Someone check into the Lumix. I have their point and shoot and love, do want to get into the higher range camera.

Welcome. You get the camera you like the feel of, all the camera manufacturers product excellent equipment and no manufacturer is better than another. Its the person who makes the picture, not the camera!

Many people using either Nikon or Canon, because once you getting more involved into photography, you'll most likely start expanding your equipment for things you want to do and here, these two companies just offer more than any other. If you interested in a special lens, or gadget, lot of companies do not even offer them, but you will most likely be able to get it from Nikon or Canon. If you buy a DSLR from them, you are buying into a system of theirs, that hardly have any limits! They are simply the ones that are most complete!

Welcome to our forum!

Try some comparisons. Don't rule out refurbished and used.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

You are so right, it's the photographer that counts as most high end cameras are just fine. Thanks for the insight.
