My question to you would be, are they getting better image results with their "fake camera's" than you? :)

I agree..
Over the years there has always been cheep forms of recording images..
Some may remember the instomatics, 110, disc, just to name a few,
Oh and I must not leave out the Polaroid line.
The point and shoot camera s etc.
Yes they are and always have been annoying and somewhat embarrassing to see people use them and think they are capturing a high quality product.
Well we who have committed ourselves to a higher level of real photography must endure these kind of people, they are and have been ,and always will be around.
They supply the money for the technology for us to use and enjoy our better equipment. In purchasing these poor image making devices.
Everyone wants to be a good photographer, few are willing to do what is required to make not take images..
We who are serious must work harder , learn to work around them when in our way , choose a different view point, do better homework and arrive at the scene when they are not around, real photography has been made in this way always.
On a rare occasions you get to see the photographer in a scene surrounded by unflattering circumstances making an image.
Unfortunately that's the case most of the time.
They are usually and unfortunately not the only one there.
I as well as many of you have the story of how the shot got made,
and what it took to get it made..
You are not alone in this subject..

Interesting that you're talking about being bothered by new technologies and the people who use them. I would have rather seen your photos of SE Asia.

I’m just completing a month long trip around SE Asia and have just about had it with the throngs of smartphone and tablet snap shooters (not photographers) who clog every venue I visited. Personally, I have two iPhones and three iPads but rarely use them for taking anything other than something interesting like a sign or other local oddity and usually just for my records. I do, however, take the occasional selfie and may have someone take a quick tourist shot of my wife and I in front of something noteworthy. Other than that, I use my Canon 5D III with a long enough lens that I can breach the wall of smartphones in front of me. I do recognize that these “tourist” photographers have just as much right to take shots as I do but it’s the way they take those photos that drives me crazy. Here are my main issues.

1. They must always stand a long way from their subject so that the entire background is included. This means that for some length of time the lane between them is technically closed while the photographer (I hate to use that word) fidgets with the camera and/or the subject goes through several modeling poses so that the shoot can be completed. Inevitably, the shooter and subject change places and repeat the process.

2. With groups, everybody wants every picture taken with their camera which means that the particular location is closed for a while. Maybe someone should invent a selfie-stick that holds 4-6 smartphones so that they can get it done with one click.

3. In order to take a picture with a smartphone or tablet you must raise it well above your head in order to get a clear shot and in most cases a small adjustment with your DSLR will get you around them for your shot. The worst situation is the tablet user when they hoist what appears to be equivalent of a large sign up to take their shot. Sometimes I wish they would turn the tablet on selfie mode so they could see the annoyed people behind them. I attended a few cultural performances (water puppet show, etc.) and was steaming when a lady in front of us with an iPad appeared to want to video the entire performance and who was totally oblivious the attendees behind her.

4. Lastly, selfie-sticks are really annoying because they are not just used for selfies but for all of their photos. They walk around with a phone on a three foot pole and in large crowd it is just not that practical.

We unfortunately live in an age where everybody on the planet owns a device capable of taking pictures and where in the old days only people with actual cameras taking actual photos would be trying to get the perfect shot of something that they deemed important. Oh do I yearn for those days.

Yes, this is truly horrible. Not only are there so many of them, but they are all human beings, which makes the situation even worse. I first saw this at Yellowstone a few years ago, and it amazed me. That's why I mainly shoot landscapes and break into tourist attractions after-hours.

I can sympathize to a degree. As a costumed historical re-enactor/interpreter at a National Historical Park
I have my photo taken many time throughout the course of the day. Space is limited and can
become quite crowded when a tour bus arrives. Everyone wants a photo and for many, especially
foreign visitors, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I do my best to accommodate everybody.

If I looked like this, I'd be taking selfies too.

You just have to get to tunnel view in Yosemite very early in the day before all the tourists arrive on their tour buses and clutter up the nice view

By the way I am not a "ludite",I am sitting here a 4:45am typing this out on my iPhone because my computers are not accessible at the moment. I have learned not to let all of those who use iPhones and iPads to record their experience bother me---they have a right to be there too.

I hate people that drive 3 mph under the speed limit, don't use their turn signals and don't understand how a four way stop works. We all hate something so you can either avoid it or just deal with it. I take pictures on my phone for memories, which is what these people are doing. I use my camera to try to capture a moment. If you don't like all the people in your way, South East Asia is the wrong place to go.

You don't need to go there anymore for the effect. Due to the now annual Asian Invasion you can experience the same at any of the major western National Parks, e.g. Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Bryce from May through September.

The scary thing recently is that in addition to the bus tours they have started renting cars. The Asians drive scary different.

Using a selfi stick while driving is defiantly not recommended because they can involve you or your loved one in an accident ... but suggesting they take their selfi with an alligator, bear or shark may be a better idea or personal tip for them while on your vacation...

I don't pay attention to them, they are just "picture taker", let them have fun. By the way I don't have any of those "smart-phone or I-phone", I only use that simple "flip phone", no text; no camera. Just real phone for talking to my family and friends!

Sometimes you have no choice but to use your smart phone, like when your lens breaks while at a great location with a shot you really want to get. I know it is not a sharp as it could be and definitely is not post process usable but I still got the shot.

I don't have a problem with the people who have a selfie stick and a smartphone what I do have a problem with is the people who are very inconsiderate of other people using the selfie stick and their smartphone not all but there are a few. I just came back from a European trip and found that a lot of the Asian people were very inconsiderate of other people while taking their selfies guess that's the way it is so you learn to live with it and try not to let it bother you, the new world or just stay home in your cozy house.

My thought exactly. Many people who write on UHH have no writing skills at all.

I don't even own all that stuff. There are those who live on their gadgets, they text each from across the dinner table. The telephone is is very intrusive device, There are places where they do not belong. I have no problems with people using their phone cameras, but I do have problems with users who don't use common courtesy when snapping pictures, even those with "real" cameras.

Stay away from the tourist stuff and hit the highways and byways. You will really get photos of real life in that area. If you want pictures of the tourist stuff that draws people to the area pick up a few postcards. The folks that take those photos for postcards take them when the crowds are not there. Thay get to pick the right light to do the job well; who knows maybe better than you can. Remember those other folks are on holiday also and have every right to enjoy themselves as much as you do.. if you hate crowds of people taking photos then stay home. With your arrogant attitude I doubt there are many people thronging to enter your domicile and irritate you.
