Probably a Redundant Question

But searching hasn't found an answer, so I'm going to ask anyway...

I just got my Nikon Coolpix P900 for my trip next week, and am trying to get as familiar with it as I can. I've downloaded the reference manual and have gone through the main parts (and did a quick check in the index). I'll probably spend time during the flight re-reading it before I board ship.

Here's the issue that concerns me: the movie record button sits right below where I normally place my thumb. I've inadvertently started capturing video when all I was doing was adjusting still photo settings. I was hoping I could use the function key to re-map this button, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Is it simply a matter of training myself to place my thumb differently, or is there a way to disable the movie record button?

The same thing happened to me with my Canon sx50. I was surprised how quickly I was able to learn to avoid it, though But would be great to know if there's a way to disable. Good question, Fred!

Thanks, Linda. I have a good three days to learn to avoid pressing that button!

I do not think you can deprogram a factory button.

If you didn't want the movie capabilities, a large dollop of araldite over the button would do the trick .

Or a small shirt collar button taped on top of it!

The shirt button idea doesn't sound too bad, or use a small raised screw escutcheon (used for oval head screws) glued on carefully will let you use the video button, but protect it from unintentional operation.

Some Olympus bodies have the same issues and I discussed it with an Olympus representative. The button should be placed where it will not interfere with still photography.
I have learned to avoid it with with my EP-5 and EPL-1.

But only the last digit of the thumb (a.k.a. second phalanx), so that you can still give a double thumbs up!

I don't see any re-assign options available.
