I will be in San Diego the first part of April and am interested in doing some night photography. Any suggestions as to what and where to shoot? Bridges, city skylines, etc?

Thanks for your help! Also I will be doing another photo expedition to Tanzania in August if any of you are interested.

The WWII era Midway Aircraft Carrier makes for a great daytime tour and a return visit for night shots with the ship lit up at night.

The cityscape across the harbor from Harbor Island is nice.

No suggestions at all...part of your creativity as a photographer is to find the subjects which interest YOU and capture them in ways artistically that YOU like....exploring is sometimes 50% of the fun. I would not spoil your fun with suggested sites...it might inhibit your creativity!

San Diego in April is a nice time to visit, although it may be chilly at night with a stray rain shower or two. Some buildings and areas are only "lit up" during summer months, but there is still plenty to photograph and you will miss the summer tourists (always a good thing).

Some ideas for night photography (not mentioned by others):

Hotel del Coronado - beautiful when lit at night
Balboa Park - stroll around, many nice buildings, the lily pond with the lighted buildings in the background is picturesque
Downtown: Convention Center, the SD Central Library, walk around and try crossing a bridge to get some height.
Gas Lamp Quarter downtown is a lot of fun, not sure how easy to get photos
Horton Plaza (also downtown) has interesting photo opportunities (be careful about parking in the parking structure unless you dine or buy something there, can be quite pricey to park otherwise!)
Waterfront: Star of India, other ships and buildings, San Diego Admin building (with the art decco touches may actually be better during day)
Some of the piers may be lighted at night, I don't remember
Coronado Bridge - reflected in the Bay waters is nice - if you cross the bridge to Coronado, the city skyline looking back across the Bay is beautiful
If you are willing to drive, the UCSD Library is very unique (see attachment, not my photo)

Of course there are more, but this should keep you busy

When I was there a couple of years ago I found the view of downtown and the Coronado bridge to be nice when taken from Coronado Island. Here are a couple of examples from my trip to whet your appetite. Enjoy your trip.

What does Tanzania have to do with San Diego?

It's called an aside.

aside |əˈsīd|
adverb

3) a remark that is not directly related to the main topic of discussion: the recipe book has little asides about the importance of home and family.

And as an aside, having visited San Diego several times, I'd love to visit Tanzania.

There is a book called PhotoSecrets San Diego by Andrew Hudson in it you will find everything you need to know about San Diego and where to take photos. You can pick it up used for about $10.00 on Amoson. It is a great Ref.book for S.D.

Forgive me but creativity generally refers to actually taking the photograph. Knowing what to photograph in a new area can depend a lot on recommendations from others. There is no harm to someone's creativity by suggesting an interesting place to visit.

Ditto! When I went on 3-day business trip to SD I was very glad to have had some suggestions of areas to visit. It's not like I had all my life to explore. The recommendations were very helpful.

Thank you Dennis, I couldn't agree more. These suggestions help me save time and help me in planning the time I need to allow for various location shoots.

I would observe that, contrary to how it appears in some of the pictures posted here, San Diego is not a toy city - the buildings are life size, they’re not made out of Lego blocks. You may want to use your wide angle lenses for what they were designed for.
