Are Photo Trade Shows Worth the Effort

I've been to the photo show at the Javits Center in NYC several times. Entry free, but I have to travel about five hours round trip on the train, and that's not free. Going there has never accomplished anything for me, but it's nice seeing the new products up close. Of course, I try to get there early so I can walk on my own, rather than being pushed along by the herd. I doubt I will go again.

Of course they are. Two years ago in Los Angeles, I had a 1 on 1 discussion with Topaz Labs' Developer, which made a major difference in my workflow.

Sounds good. I already know everything, so that's why I don't plan to go again.

You never cease to amaze, Jerry! Just from your treasure trove of posts, you pretty much mine great stuff to pass on to readers. New reviews can be gleaned in specialty forums; shouldn't need a trek to center city for anything, unless there is a flock of naked women scurrying around....

That's the way I see it. Everything is available right here, on my computer. As for the naked women, going topless in NY is perfectly legal. MYC has a "Topless Day" every year. Again, the Web provides all I need n that dept, too. :D

I get a kick out of the title of this article. What did they expect? :D

I've always found trade shows to be a complete waste of time. Here in the UK £13 (USD 16) to get in and train costs make for an expensive day out. The shows are usually crowded and you don't really get time to talk. Our local camera shop holds it's own version of a trade show, twice a year. The reps are there from the camera companies, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, Sony, Pentax, Panasonic, Sigma and Tamron, as well as some tripod, bag and filter people. They have time to talk, the gear is available to handle, and there are also lectures (small fee) going on in a small theatre just across the road from the camera shop. Free to enter, there's usually good show discounts and best of all the Lemon Drizzle Cake goes well with tea or coffee.

I enjoy the trade show in NYC. Vendors help you with their products and there is usually discount. Various camera manufactures will clean your sensor for free. I go with a friend and it's fun.

I enjoy the occasional trade show, but I find classes more useful and frankly, art shows more useful for opening my mind to different ways of seeing. Went to a print show in LA last year and a French photographer had a brilliant way of photographing nudes. He used patterns of light (lines on one, random dots on one, a grid of dots on one) and they created a whole new appreciation of the subject's form. Learned much more than I would from a trade show.
