I have read a number of posts about the pros & cons of 3rd party batteries vs. OEM. Since the price of OEM Canon batteries is priced, IMO, similar to non-generic drugs, I was motivated to take the advice of some UHH members and try Wasabi. I went to Amazon (link below) and ordered a 2-pack with included charger for $29.99. They arrived yesterday partially charged.

The issue I'm interested in with 3rd party batteries is only if they read properly in the camera, giving info like power available and charge condition. I'm not particularly fearful of camera damage, especially with so many UHH members having had good results. I currently shoot the 7D Mark II, the 5Ds, and the new 5D Mark IV. I have found that Vivitar batteries do work properly in my 7D and 5Ds but not in the 5D Mark IV, thus the motivation to try the highly recommended Wasabi brand. You may note that going to the link below shows a list of compatible models and that list does NOT include the 5D Mark IV, so I was expecting that, like the Vivitars, the Wasabis wouldn't read correctly either.

After giving them a full charge, I inserted the Wasabis into the Mark IV and they read and perform fine. To be sure, I also inserted them in the 7D II and the 5Ds and they seem to work fine as well. I can't make a statement at this point with regard to how many shots I can take with a Wasabi vs the OEM Canon E6n, but I'm expecting a reasonable number can be shot. When I consider the cost of the Canon OEM batteries from B&H at $64 each compared to the Wasabi at $15, I think I can tolerate reasonable performance with regard to shots per charge.

I am well aware of the number of times this topic has been raised, but I have not seen anyone speak specifically about Wasabi use in the 5D Mark IV. If I missed it earlier, my apologies for the redundancy. If not, I hope new owners of the 5D Mark IV can benefit from this information.

Interesting. You will have to report the number of shots you are able to take on a charge and with what settings. i.e. with GPS and in which mode, jpg or raw, etc.

Did you try registering the battery in the camera to see if it registers okay? I'm curious to see if it does. And, Please keep us updated on their performance. I got a free Watson battery from B&H when I bought my 7D Mark II and it doesn't last as long as the OEM batteries, and it won't work in my 5D Mark IV.

I don't know about registering the battery in camera. I inserted it and turned on the camera. It shows battery strength on the display. I went to the menu and clicked on battery info. It shows remaining capacity, shutter count, and recharge performance. I don't know what else it could show...how would I register it? The other 3rd party batteries wouldn't show that...these do.

At the same menu where you see all that battery info, you can press the info button and register that battery. Each battery has it's own unique registration or serial number. When registered, you can track it's performance. I'm surprised you didn't notice this. I have seen this feature on all the bodies I've owned since the original 7D.

For me that probably falls under category of TMI. If it works and tells me what I need to know, I usually don't go looking for a lot more info...especially about batteries. That being said, now I'll have to go see what you're talking about. Thanks...I think.

I have a Watson LP-E6 that B&H included with either my 6D or 7DII. Have had it for probably close to 2 yr now. Works fine in both of my current bodies, the 7DII and 5DIV. In fact, it shows a better performance rating (3 green bars) then a Canon LP-E6 (2 green bars) of about the same age.

I got a Watson from B&H with a Nikon D4s a couple of years ago. I never kept track of the number of shots, but it seems to be working as well as the Nikon.

I just ordered 2 Wasabi batteries with charger for a Panasonic LX10. I mostly wanted a charger because I hate having to charge the battery in the camera. I don't have faith that the door covering the charging port will last.
