Looks like a key requirement is a bowl tripod, or add an additional bowl head adapter to a flat tripod mount. Might be worth a try. The bowl looks like a very fast way to level out.

Looks good. Question, will it still work at -10 or may it freeze up like I've seen the Nest gimbal head do?. This might be the head that would work with my spotting scope. Thanks for the info, I will look more into this.

Seemed to work quite well high up in the mountains where they were at and, judging by what they were wearing, it was pretty darned cold up there. As far as I am concerned I wouldn't be out in -10 degree weather. I would be more worried about my camera! That is why I live in Florida!

I'd worry about humidity if I lived in Florida.

I had seen this video. I am planning on looking for a fluid head at Photoshop World this April.

I'm hoping that some other folks have experience with one and will jump in with some knowledge/advise.

Joan, I have 3 fluid heads, from a relatively light one to a Manfrotto 509, which is a hefty one designed to carry large video cameras. Mine all have domes (for fast, accurate leveling) but you can get them with a flat head. I bought mine for video work, where they are a must for smooth videos. However, they are also great for stills, especially for wildlife/sports/action where you have to track a moving subject. Here is a link for the Manfrotto 509. It might be an over kill for you, & the smaller (& less expensive) 500 & 502 models may be all that you need--both will carry a DSLR with a jumbo size lens. Earl.
