Question about raw+jpeg

Pardon my LOK (lack of knowledge) but when I shoot raw+jpeg does the camera shoot 2 separate images or 1 raw image and convert it to jpeg in camera? The manual does not answer this question.

The camera shoots one image and saves it in both formats.

It only takes one raw image and records it, but it also records a processed jpg version of that same image.

Cameras never shoot JPEG! A JPEG is always generated from RAW data. Hence there is no need to make two exposures to get RAW+JPEG. And in fact if you shoot just RAW the camera still generates a JPEG for preview on the camera, and that JPEG is embedded in the RAW file too so that a conversion need not be done to preview what the image is.
