Hello everyone!

Looking to upgrade and at the same time par down my lense collection. Use a D750, looking to make a purchase of 70-200 ED VRii but also the Tamron has a very similar lens at a more affordable price tag, but is it really a deal? After looking at more than a few reviews I walked away more confused as the NIKKOR and TAMRON are comparable, one review was specific to lenses that work best on a D750 and leaned toward the TAMRON. Opinions?

One more, question, looking to make a purchase of a prime wide angle to be used for real estate, this search provided too many reviews Andy opinions that now I am totally confused.

Thank you in adavance for any advice or recommendations!

Why not rent a lens that you are interested in and go from there. I have a duplication of lens in the form of overlapping and should have have waited or research more before making the splash. I use Canon and have the 70 200L hundred and it is good lens although I do not use it as much as I thought I would. It is large and heavy for a walk around lens, more of specialty lens. I have other lens that seem to overlap or do not serve the purpose as I advance and diversified my photography. You are not always going to be one percent with any lens I have found out and it always seems the occasion arise when you have the wrong lens on the camera or not with you.

Thank you for your reply, I probably should have been more specific.
My equipment is Nikon D750, I shoot events, weddings, and portraiture, breaking into real estate.
Currently have 24-120 f4 VR, I understand that I will not always be shooting with just one lens, I am looking for recommendations on one prime, leaning toward a 20mm f1.8 however there was conflicting reviews. I am asking on this site because I want an unbiased recommendation. Most sites have a stake in giving favorable reviews for one specific lens vs. another.
The nikkor 70-200 f2.8 would be used for sports and weddings, I prefer to be less intrusionary during weddings with the exception of traditional or posed images, then I pop on the 24-120.

So with all that info, maybe I can get some helpful recommendations.

Thanks all!

You confirmed one of my thoughts on the subject of the comparison.

Thank you

You may find better QC with the Nikon.

You will need more than one lens for RE - typically an ultrawide which you will use infrequenty (or should use infrequently), a 24 PC-E and a 45 PC-E. You will make most use of the 24 and 45, making use of the shift to create fast panos without moving the camera - which are almost always a better alternative than using an ultrawide. The 14-24 is a great ultrawide - but it should only be used in very tight situations were you don't have a lot of working space - small rooms, bathrooms, powder rooms, walk-in closets, etc.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply.
Question, any thoughts on the 20mm f1.8? Also, curious as to why you recommend not using the ultra wide angle lenses. I am trying to learn as much as I can about wide angle lenses.

Thank you again!

I believe the 24-70 and 70-200 are part of the holy trinity. 24 -70 is probably not the best choice for real estate work though.

Best,

Hi Twisted, I use an old F2.8 20mm Nikkor, (with dubious provenance, as I bought it from a press hack!) it is a wonderful lens and it suits me. I lust after the F1.8! Must buy flowers and chocs. for Mrs. 'What do you want another bloody lens for?'

The 70-200 f/2.8 VR II has a true zoom range of 70mm to 200mm while focused at infinity. Thus, it may be correctly classified as a 70-200.

When you focus to a closer distance, however, the focal length changes. Apparently, when set to 200mm, the actual focal length is closer to 135mm at the lens's minimum focus distance. Some people got annoyed at this because it reduces the available magnification; the maximum reproduction ratio is 0.25. It also exhibits breathing problems which can cause dust to enter the lens.

If the reviews and comparisons don't give you a definite answer, it's probably because the lenses are so close that shooting with one or the other is not going to make a difference to you. Save money and buy the Tamron.

I have owned most versions of the Nikon 80-200 (too many to mention) then I got into the Nikon 70-200. The VRII version is excellent, it does not focus as close (one foot closer) as the new version but for most people the VRII version is great. I own this lens and I would highly recommend it to any one who wants quality optics at a very reasonable price. That said you can get this lens MINT off ebay for not much more than a new (other lens you mentioned but will not be mentioned in my post) lens. Good luck.

The Tamron 70-200 lens is fantastic. It has a much better warranty and the customer service at Tamron is great. (5 years Tamron ). The lens gets the same ratings as the Nikon. The Nikon lens has a great deel and sturdy build but the same is true of the Tamron.

For real estate get the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens.

Unless you have money to burn or want to impress your Nikon friends, get the NEW Tamron G2 version and do not fret.

For wide, I like the Sigma 20mm f1.4.
