If you spend several hundred dollars, you're going to get a good camera. I prefer DSLRs, but there are small choices.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

Get something small...but capable. You'll have enough (or your significant other) to carry around baby related.

Sony rx100 series would be a great option...if you wanted something with interchangeable lenses, then look at m4/3.

No, but it is a big reason.

You do not have to spend large amounts of money on a camera. E-bay has thousands of quality cameras that will all take excellent pictures. Most on UH think that a new, expensive camera will take better pictures. WRONG. It is the photographer that knows how to use the camera and knows the basics of photography. Too many purchase a new camera and instantly become a photographer. There pictures show it.

I would take a look at the Sony A6000 great small mirrorless camera. If there is enough in the budget go to the A6300 or A6500. I use the A6000 for travel.

I'd suggest you check the Canon line up, my wife loves shooting grandkids with her A1300, now discontinued, lots of similar still offered, BTW one grandson uses a newer Canon when he can get HIS camera away from his Mom. Bob.

BTW my personal choice of a small camera is the G16, mentioned by another poster. Bob.

whatever you reason for buying a camera is a good one. there many great choices in the used market. actually call b&h, adorama, and keh, talk to a real person and ask advise on a good camera/lens combo.there's no reason they can't hook you up with something good for under $500.00

Lots and lots in that price range. Stick with pocket size, non-interchangeable lens, 16+ MP'S, fast recycle between shots. The Canon G7x and G9x come to mind.

I disagree about the software comment. Most people can produce perfectly acceptable photographs without using any software whatsoever. I have used many cameras from so-called 'entry level' to much more up market models and usually they produce great photos from automatic setting without tweaking. No, I don't use auto these days having gone far beyond but j.pegs straight from the camera will satisfy anyone.

I totally agree with this comment!! I have no software and use JPEG and have all my photos straight out of camera. I'm not a "fanatic" with my results. I just want a good looking picture I can be proud of. I never print bigger then 8x11 and am happy with what I get.

I highly recommend a Nikon D5500 with 18-140mm lens. Both have very high approval rates, especially for image quality. I've had many cameras since 1972 and this is far and away the best. Use snapsort.com to compare cameras.

Yes. A good choice.

Buy a Nikon D5200 or a Nikon D7200 if you have a bit more cash. Both come with a good starter lens and you can work your way up from there. I gave my daughters Nikon D3200's. It's a very nice base to start from and reasonable price from B&H Photography. You might get the D3200 cheaper at a local store and not have to pay shipping then. The D3200 has a wide to normal zoom kit lens. Any Nikon DX or AF lens can be used later.

Having used Canon, Nikon, and Sony somewhat extensively and thinking back through raising three boys which, like you, was my original motivation for buying a camera, I would suggest that an extremely good value available presently, at any price, in a camera that will fulfill your immediate ambition with baby pictures and take you all the way through high school sports and beyond would be the Sony a6000, a camera I currently own along with other much more expensive Canon cameras. It is a complicated and sophisticated small and portable mirrorless camera that will work marvelously on full automatic in the beginning and allow you to grow in your photographic skills to the extent you choose over the next many years. Amazon.com is a good place to buy what I suggested:
