I plan on using my cell phone camera which does shoot in raw and does do a good job for the most part of taking pictures if I was traveling as before by car I would take my equipment, just trying to get other thoughts on my dilemma.

I understand the desire for lighter weight. However, you will be taking photographs that you may want to work with and actually put on real walls. The cellphones are getting better, but the physics are against them. Is it possible to rent or borrow a Sony a6000 or Fuji MILC. That would lower your weight problem without sacrificing the image quality.

Just because the cellphone can shoot RAW doesn't mean it can overcome the other disadvantages, like 'digital' "zooming" and low pixel count/pixel size. Maybe in five or ten years. If you use the cellphone, you may find yourself in the same place I was when I took the challenge to shoot a contest with a Canon G12. I got great photos and actually won a second place--all on-line. Then when I tried to print, the images began to fall apart at about 8x10, especially if I decided to crop.

The MILCs have aps-c sensors and light weight. I am exhibiting right now in two shows. Many of the images were shot with either my Sony a6000 or my a6300. I am somewhat mobility challenged.

After spending all this money on cameras and lenses, then take a cellphone. I think not! ;)

You are RIGHT! Take your little camera and have at it in comfort! I think the Iphone was the greatest step in photography so far. The rest of the photographers WILL come to their senses in time! Learn your little camera---

If what you want are 4x6 (max) snapshots in good light, then the phone is OK. BUT, if your pictures of the trip are actually important to you, might be shot in low/available light, might require a tele, etc. then take a REAL camera. Can be a P&S, bridge or a small DSLR, but an iPhone as convenient as it is, is no match for a $500 camera, which isn't much larger or heavier. For a list of good choices, refer to burkphoto's link. It will fit in your pocket, take 20MP raw exposures, and have a huge zoom range, and won't weigh more than a pound. Why would you not do that? If the $500 doesn't fit your budget, then rent one.

What is more important to you? The photos you will return with or not having to carry the "heavier" equipment?? That is the decision you have to make here, the way I see it.......

I have a Nikon S9900, around $260; I bought it for the zoom. Rated a CR best buy. Takes nice photos, but is a heavy small camera.

Don't think I would make that wonderful trip without my D7100. Just my 2 cents.

I understand. Even if your two lenses are a 28-300mm and 10-24mm which would cover everything. I don't know.....the 10-24mm is not that big. Find some place to stick it. Get a strap that will allow you to carry the camera with the 28-300mm on your side. However, if this doesn't work.....consider a Panasonic Lumix fz bridge camera. One attached lens that would give you both wide angle and zoom out to 400mm or 480mm depending on which one you got.

Why not get a new/used/refurbished D3300/D3400? - very lightweight, inexpensive and will fit all your D7200 DX lenses - so it makes a great travel/backup to the D7200 and will take great pix! Smartphone cameras are okay for quick snaps at close range, but lack the flexibility and IQ of a DSLR.

I like my Nikon. But I don't want all the lens. So I bought a Tamron 16-300 mm lens. For me it covers a huge area of lens. I would take a wide angle with me too. But it is up to you. As another said get a back pack or sling.

I too have ask that similar question. I was looking into a mirrorless camera. I have researched and ask people on this forum. There are several out there that are really good. I researched the Panasonic Lumix G85 It got good reviews. You can get it and a lens for around $1000.00, so it doesn't break the bank. And it is small and light weight. There are several out there and they all look pretty good. I am still pondering which one to get. Figure I will try a few of them out before my next trip. I can't imagine going where you are without a camera. If nothing else a good point and shoot. I have an Olympus P&S that I took to Italy and France, and I got some really good pictures with it. Have fun and stay safe. Can't wait to see some photos!

That's the way I do it when I'm traveling with a group and sightseeing. My 6D is a lightweight full frame so I grab the Tamron 28-300 which is also very clmpact and lightweight and covers most everything in terms of zoom range and f stops and with acceptable quality and hang it on a Black Rapid Sport. It is very comfortable and out of the way. I take my 16-35 along but not take it out of the hotel unless I know I'm going to be in close in areas.

I agree. My wife took a Canon sx160 on a European tour a few years ago and got excellent shots everywhere. The sx160 and similar bridge cameras are inexpensive and far outshoot phones in terms of zoom and light control. And they are small and easy to carry.

In July we did a 21 day trip through Italy then to Switzerland where we did a river cruise on the Rhine from Basil to Amsterdam. My D80 went out on me in Rome so we were limited (that limited should be in caps) to our telephones for photography until a friend we met up with in Florence loaned me his spare D80 for the river cruise portion of our trip. Thanks to the loan of the D80 combined with my 18 - 200 lens (only lens I felt necessary to take with me) I was able to get some truly great photos that would not have been possible with the cell phones.
On our trip we traveled by plane, private coach, automobile, train, local bus, and river boat; never had a single issue with having the camera with me or carrying it on sight seeing excursions. By the way, due to my D80 malfunction (amazingly I found someone to repair it for a reasonable cost) I located and purchased a used D7100; I am most happy with the new toy.
