These are young Masked Lapwings (incorrectly called plovers by the/us locals). When they are adults, they will lose the mottled coloring on their wings. The last shot is an adult for comparison. Downloading is recommended.

Funny little bird, but nice set, Earl!
What are those long, interesting things on the ground in the first two... some kind of seeds I'm assuming, but from what tree?

I'm not a hundred percent sure, Angela, but I think they are from a Norfolk Pine. NPs are abundant in this area. Earl.

Yes they are Earl. They are pine needles from a Norfolk Island Pine tree. Love the two shots of the "Juvies" mate. We have always called them Plovers down here too. Are Plves n fact different bird?

Lol, John. I have known them as plovers since I was a kid--as a matter of fact, I had never heard the word 'lapwing' until I bought a book on Aussie birds last year. I think they might both be in the same wide family. Earl.

Earl, a very unique looking bird. Showing both the immature and adult makes it even a better series for me. Thanks.

Greg
