Actually they are migratory bewick's and I think, whoopers, that come down from Arctic regions for the winter. They spend their nights in the safety of the vast flooded wash and graze on the fields during the day. This field will have recently been harvested, carrots, parsnips or similar root crops. The farmers are compensated for any crop damage caused by the swans by the authorities. It's a win win, the birds are safe and happy, the farmers are making money and the bird watchers are in seventh Heaven.
