Tamron has a new version of the 150-600mm lens. Tamron SP 150-600mm, f5-6.3 VC USD G2. Available in Canon, Nikon, and Sony A-mounts. Full Frame Format. Price is $1400, and can be pre-ordered from B&H and other camera venues. Those who ordered Sony's newest full frame a99ii should be delighted with this new lens. The B&H Reviews were mostly 5 Stars, from those who got this lens early.

I'd be interested in an image quality and VR comparison with the similarly priced Nikon 200-500.

They are not "pre-order", they are full production models and have been available now for a couple of months. I have sold several of them. Much better than the original version in terms of focus speed, stabilization, and weather sealing. Plus the tripod collar foot has TWO holes instead of only one, as well as being Arca-Swiss compatible without adding a QR plate. Tamron got this one figured out, and its also compatible with the Tamron USB Docking station for adjustments and firmware updates.

I rented this lens a couple of months ago. Loved it! Sharp throughout the range, well balanced to handle quickly while handheld. Excellent lens!

They are pre-order for the Sony A-mount version from B&H.

After seeing those images, I may have to cancel my wish for an 85mm prime lens, and start saving more quarters for this Tamron 150-600mm.

Great photos. How close were you to the birds?

You did not specify the Sony A mount, they are scheduled to start shipping in January.

Outstanding images Ira, very sharp indeed. What camera were they taken with if I can ask?

Both of the shots were pretty close, 30-50 feet. The top shot of the Great Blue Heron was cropped. This Alligator shot was about 500 feet and it is slightly cropped. The D7200 is a crop sensor, so this lens was equal to 900mm. These three shots were taken at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach, Florida. I live pretty close to there and shoot there often

When Tamron introduced the original 150-600 it was pretty well received and indeed the images I have seen from this lens are very good using proper photographic techniques. I have heard that the new lens is even better.
For about the same price we can buy Nikon (obviously for Nikon users) excellent 200-500 f5.6 VR and that would be my first choice.
I do not shoot action or wildlife often but when I do my lens is the old 80-400 f4-5.6 VR, old technology but a very good and sharp lens that has given me outstanding images. I wish it had AF-S though but there is a new version with that feature at a price I cannot simply afford.

I have been saving for the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary to shoot on my 60D. I decided on that lens based on the issues that the previous Tamron had involving panning and VC. Has anyone seen or heard of how this lens compares to the Sigma? If it is significantly better I will keep saving. I rented the Sigma some months ago and really liked it. I may have to rent this one too, but that just dips into my savings.
