Hey everyone, I 've been taking pictures seriously for about 2 years now. I have a Nikon D3200. My question to everyone is how do I know what size lens fits my camera. I'm looking at a 500mm lens. Do I have to look for a certain size? What does the "f" stand for?
"F"n expensive. Actually it is referring to the maximum lens aperture
will you post some pictures?

A few options: Nikon 200-500mm, sigma 150-600mm sport, or tamron 150-600mm. All good lenses, with the Nikon being my choice. If you buy one of the off brands, just make sure it has a Nikon mount.
Now seriously, you've been taking picture for 2 years and you're asking that, where's the joke
At 500mm, you'll want either a Nikon or 3rd party with an "F mount". Your D3200 does not have a focus motor, so you need a 'G' from Nikon or documented support by the 3rd party of auto focus support for your camera model. This link is a good place to start for technical details:

Are you surprised? This is a recurring thing around here.

I HIGHLY suggest you enroll in a photography class near you, or at least join a camera club, sounds like you need to start with some VERY basic lessons. I wish you the best of luck.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm"G" has nothing to do with the focus motor. ,"AFS" designates Nikon's lenses that have the focus motor he needs for that camera. "G" just indicates the lens has no aperture control on the lens.
Did I oversleep again? Is it April 1st already?

What you want and what you need is the NEW Nikon 200-500 F5.6. Here the F stands for the maximum aperture of the lens, in this case, the largest F in 5.6, then the next number would be 8, which creates a smaller opening in the lens than the F5.6, in fact, F8 is exactly one half the size of F5.6 and so it lets in 1/2 the light that F5.6 did, this continues on, F11, F16, F22, and so on, each F number higher lets in 1/2 the light that the F number that is lower did, and so on. And if you follow this you are doing better than me. Anyway, buy the 200-500 and shoot the F out of it.
Go to the Nikon web site, it will tell you the difference between FX and DX and give you a list of what lenses which fit your camera. Basically FX is for full frame. sensors.
