Hi fellow UHH members,

Here it is, the photo contest you've all been waiting for. The chance for not only a cash prize but the chance to get your winning image framed and displayed in a leading art gallery in the heart of Cornwall, U.K. Low entry fees make this a "must enter" contest. Open for entries today until 23rd January 2017 but get your entries in early. So dig out your best coastal or seaside shots. Just follow the link. http://www.thealvertongallery.co.uk/shop/competitions/alverton-penzance-photographic-competition/.

hello Martin I emailed some of my images to that Alverton Gallery cos I hoped they would display some of my prints on their walls but now they've rejected me even though i said I'd pay the fee like it says on their website. They said i need to get more experience and stuff then come back to them in the future but I don't see any point entering their photo contest if they don't like my work

But thanks for telling me about it tho

Hi Holly. I shouldn't be automatically downhearted by that rejection. Having been in touch with them a number of times and sent my own images, (one of which they also rejected), I understand that they just set the bar quite high in terms of what they believe will enhance their display and of course, for the artists benefit, ultimately sell. They are one of the few galleries that respect photographers alongside paint artists and I know they get a lot of artists approach them with their work and no doubt some also get rejected. My advice is to keep shooting good images and why not give the owner, a Mr. Driscoll a personal phone call or e mail and ask him to clarify his reasons for rejection. As for the contest, that is very much another matter and the gallery owner is only one of the judges so I would still persuade you to have a go, what have you got to loose apart from a fiver? Let me know how you get on.

M :o)

Thanks for the quick reply, they do have some really good photographers in the gallery like you and another guy called Philip Trevennen so maybe your right that I have to work on it to get up to a better standard, maybe I'll leave it a while and enter the contest nearer the deadline cos then they won't remember me lol
and yes i can afford a fiver haha
What do you think to Philp Trevennen's work I think he shoots mainly film photography ?

Hi holly, Yes, Philip Trevennan has been a professional photographer in Penzance for over 20 years and shoots some beautiful landscape. It's very nice of you to compliment my photography also. Did you peek the website? I think you're right, just stump up a fiver and your best seascape shot nearer to the 23rd January next year. There are 10 chances to win which is a lot more than many other contests.

Sounds like a plan tho i've not done contests before, is it best to enter say a week before the deadline cos I just think if I left it to the last minute the judges could get snowed with pics and not notice mine.

Hi holly, Personally speaking I wouldn't leave it to the last minute, Depending on which server they are using there may be limited bandwidth, especially on the last few days and there's a chance you won't get your pic in. Believe me, it makes no difference to your shot being noticed if you post it on the first day or the last, If it catches the judges eyes then it will, regardless. Post and keep your fingers crossed :o)

Hey thanks Martin I didn't realise your famous lol. I also been keeping an eye on the Alverton Gallery Facebook page and they've had some great entries already to the comp, not sure I'm good enough but I'll give it a go soon..

Getting famous is easy when you enter as many photo contests as I do. Getting rich from it is the problem, lol. :o)
