Hello. I am a photographer who will print photos on site of the event I'm shooting. I'd like to know which printers are best. I've tried a laser - jet printer however the quality was terrible. The prints I'd like them to be the best quality. Please advise & give insight. Thanks

Check the printer section here on the forum Printers and Color Printers Forum. A good simple rule is if you want good photos your printer should have at least 6 cartridges. A really good starting printer is the Canon Pixma Pro 100. It's dye based ink and generally these don't clog as easily as the more expensive Pixma Pro 10 or 1 but will give you beautiful reproductions with less hassle. It's an 8 cartridge printer. I have one and love it and there are a lot of other Pro 100 users on this forum as well. Check pricing at B+H, they usually have $250 rebate and a free pack of paper as well that will bring your total cost down below $150. For the price you can't beat it.

You need an InkJet or BubbleJet Printer for printing photographs. LaserJet printers work great for text and some graphics, and that varies a lot. And even most "office" or "home" printers are net great for photographs. You'll want a photography quality printer. This obviously means higher cost as well. A few current models that I am familiar with enough to recommend are

Canon PIXMA PRO-100 ($500)
Canon PIXMA PRO-10 ($700)
Canon PIXMA PRO-1 ($1,000)
Canon imagePROGRAPH iPF5100 ($2,100)
Canon imagePROGRAPH PRO-1000 ($1,300) *

I have a now discontinued PIXMA Pro-9000 (similar to a PRO-100).

Epson SureColor P400 Wide Format Inkjet ($600)
Epson SureColor P600 Wide Format InkJet ($800)
Epson SureColor P800 Wide Format InkJet ($1,300) *

These all typically print paper sizes 13x19" to * 17x22" and smaller. I'm sure that you will get additional recommendations from other UHH'ers. Good luck.

What about the Epson ecotank 2500? I'm reading that the more cartridges the better your picture. Your views?

The Epson Ecotank is only 4 cartridges. The idea is great if you use it a lot so you don't run out of ink as quickly but it's not going to give you any better photo's than any other good 4 cartridge printer. 6 cartridges or more for photography is a good rule to follow.

Ok that works for me. One more question : Dye-Sub printers? I saw one in a camera shop before & wanted to ask your opinion.

Dye subs are great if you need to use a printer on site, like at a wedding or someplace where you are shooting and need to have instant prints to sell, otherwise they are expensive and the cartridges are also expensive. It really comes down to cost/benefit and what you are actually going to use it for.

I own a Canon Pixma Pro-100 printer (8 different cartridge colors), and have made scores of 13x19-inch color prints. I am quite pleased with the accuracy of color in each of my prints.
I invite you to drop-by the UHH section Printers and Color Printing Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-120-1.html

Currently, B&H Photo has the Pro-100 on sale for $130: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/893738-REG/Canon_6228b002_Pixma_Pro_100_Photo_Inkjet.html
which includes a 50-sheet pack of 13x19-inch Semi-Gloss photo paper.

You didn't mention your budget.
For me, the printer of choice is the Epson SureColor SC-P600. Unbeatable print quality and great for Mono prints too.

Only problem with the printers mentioned are their weight. they are not easily transportable. OM talked about printing on site of the shoot

It may not be the best , but I Love my HP Pro printer, its wireless, uses 6 separate cartridges for ink . Great results , best is I use their automatic ink service . Cost 10 bucks a month , my printer is connected to their server - so when I need Ink it's automatically sent to me .

I own and love this printer. It's very reliable. I let it set a few months without printing and when I started it up yesterday, I replaced several cartridges low on ink and it prints perfectly. The problem you're going to have printing on site is it is somewhat slow to print. So you will have to consider how many prints you think you need to print within your given period!

Can't tell from the way you asked if mobility is important. Canon makes the "Canon PIXMA iP110 Mobile Inkjet Photo Printer". I have an earlier version and I'm always surprised at the quality of a print. It is not cheap to use due to cartridge size and cost. Canon would not call it a "Photo Printer" if they didn't mean it. The emphasis of the design is small size and portability.

Epson or Canon are the only real options to get professional quality prints. When you are on site, you need the photographer and someone else to do the prints for a good work flow.
