the Arca Swiss camera that Ansel Adams used from 1964 to 1968 is being offered at auction with correct provenance. what drew my interest is the selection of lenses he used with it. take a look and feel free to bid - i think i'll pass on this one.

That's OK. I already have a 4x5, Graphic View II. It works well, in very good condition, and I use it quite often. I'm not sure I need another 4x5, as I'm somewhat immune to GAS.

hi Bob,

what's your thought on the lenses he evidently used? i was a little taken aback at the selection.

Yeah, but you won't have the pleasure of telling all your friends that you have Ansel Adams' camera. Unfortunately most of them probably will have no idea who he is. >Alan

My thought is that he probably used the best available at the time. However, I'm in doubt as to whether or not he used the lenses being offered with the camera. The reason is they could have been lenses favored by the last owner, and not those favored by AA. Are they useable. Sure, I've got lenses dating back to the 60s and one to the early 50s. They are quite usable and the images are quite sharp. A few of those, I've adapted to my current digital Nikons. They work just fine.

Why taken aback? Lack of wide lenses or something else?

Most of them would. However, what difference would, even knowing, that I was using his former camera do for my photography. Probably zip. It boils down to a light tight box with a good piece of glass attached to the front. As I mentioned, I already have a 4x5. I really don't need another one. However, if there was a opportunity to be able to afford to purchase an original photograph printed by AA himself, that'd be an entirely different scenario.
