Hello club members:
Here is my question. I just took over from my daughter her d-90. The photos I am taking with it looks terrible. My Kodak brownie takes better photos. I have used every button on the camera from manual, aperture, sports, you name it. The exposure is just plain off. I am thinking maybe she dropped it and was afraid to tell me. Who knows with kids.
What suggestions and comments do you have?
Thanks as always.

Post a few 'terrible' pix, with the EXIF data attached & click the STORE ORIGINAL check box. You'll be much more likely to get helpful advice.

In the mean time, you may consider resetting the camera to its factory default setting. Consult your instuction book, or d/l from Nikon, for instructions to to that.

Good luck.

Have you reset the camera back to the factory settings? If not, try doing that and see how that works. My first DSLR was a D90.

I have re set to factory settings. Photos are nothing like my 7100. I have tried all the settings. Any thoughts and thanks in advance.

One thing you need to remember is that the D90 is only a 12mp. camera. The shot you posted look normal for a D90. according to the exif info, you are looking at a picture with 1/3 the mp. of the D7100.

Probably you are using your D7100 to take jpg pics. And probably the jpg settings in the D90 are different. Have you tried to add more saturation etc. in the jpg settings on the D90?

I've had two D90 cameras. Both of the cameras would back focus some. The D90 doesn't have AF fine tuning so there was nothing I could do about it. To me, the photos seem out of focus. I could also be the lens. Have you tried the lens that's on your D7100 on the D90?

Are these .jpeg photos straight out of the camera? Nikon sets the default sharpening for the picture controls very low at level 3. Nikon expert, Ken Rockwell, recommends going through all of the picture controls - vivid, standard, neutral, monochrome and boosting the sharpening level up to 6.

D90 -12 mp
D7100- 24.1 mp

I still occasionally use the D300s, which has basically the same sensor, and it's a great camera. These samples don't seem to have mush saturation.

I see when I look into the properties for the picture that all settings are normal. If you step up the contrast, colors and saturation in the jpg settings you will probably get the kind of pics you are looking for.

I wouldn't call these pix 'terrible' - kinda 'plain,' maybe. What do you see about in them that's so terrible?

I don't see anything terrible about these pictures. If you are shooting JPG you can adjust contrast, saturation, sharpening in Picture Control in the Shooting Menu. If you are shooting RAW - then you finish your pictures in PP. But I would not call them terrible. I remember using D70 (only 6mp, twice less than your D90) and images were sharp and contrast.
