Amateur First Time User. I have a Nikon EM and a FM2. The lens, which I used on both of them, is a Nikon Series E 50mm 1:1.8 and a Spiratone zoom 58mm 1:3.9 f=80-205mm. They took good pictures. Is it safe to use them on my D5200?
Google Ken Rockwell, he has comprehensive listings.

Absolutely. Use them in Aperture Priority or Manual and you will be fine.

Have you checked with Nikon?

Check your user's manual under "Lens Compatibility."

You can use them but only in Manual mode and the meter doesn't work. Check page 201 of your manual.
Great! Thank you. I hope to try them out in a few days.
No. I thought I would try here first.
Yes I have, but it doesn't say anything about E lens.

On page 201 it did say about E lens.
AI-, AI-modified NIKKOR or Nikon Series E lenses
My manual for my D5200 only has 89 pages.

The Nikon F mount is compatible with your D5200, but the body lacks an aperture "feeler" so there is no compatibility with a "non-CPU" lens. You have to get into the D300/D300s/D700/D7xxx range of bodies and higher to access this compatibility feature. Thus your Series E lenses will be on full manual with no light metering. The good news is that you can tweak your exposure quesses for free! No waiting for the lab to process....

I don't own the D5200 so I don't know what came with the camera. I downloaded the manual from Nikonusa.com and that's what I got. Any way the lenses will work but only with manual focus and manual exposure and no meter.
Maybe, maybe not. The deciding factor is the configuration of the hardware that interfaces with the camera. Some of the older lenses had light "deflection" features which will damage the contacts inside the camera body. Make certain that there is nothing that will damage the contacts inside the camera. If there isn't, your ok.
You might have to turn auto focus off on your camera, as some older lenses don't have auto focus capability. Similarly, exposure will need to be addressed, as well. More than likely the exposure part will work OK.
I use several older Nikkor lenses on my D700 and D800e with out a problem.

They fit, no metering though so you will need to guess at exposure.
Set shutter in manual and manually set aperture and manual focus.
But they will fit.
