Ok...well...you did pretty darn well for winging it. We notice things that other folks may not.
If you like this sort of thing, getting an incident meter would be a really good thing. When you use a meter you automatically learn things just by reading and seeing what the meter says and how things change when you adjust things.
For example, I have metered enough food shots with the same softbox and flash that I know that 18" away at 1/2 power will get me f/4 at 200 ISO so I don't actually meter every time. I've seen the number come up so many times using the same set up that I just learned it.
You should do the same; buy a meter and then practice using the same set up and get really comfortable with it...then you'll know it inside and out and when you want to change things to get other effects, you can and won't be lost.
Does that make sense?

Good advise above and you did good for winging your way through it. Keep practicing and developing your skills and knowledge and you might be amazed where you are in a year, 2 years or 5 years.
