Everywhere!! And wear really good shoes. Alot of walking will be involved. I also recommend going up in the Washington Monument for photos from above the city. They are some of my favorites. We took the Metro to our desired destination each day. Don't miss Arlington Cemetary, the Vietnam Wall, Martin Luther King Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and give yourself a whole day for the Smithsonian. And that will not be long enough! Not to mention the Daughters of the American Revolution, Supreme Court, Capital building. As you can tell, we ran out of time and are not finished with D.C. And petition your congress person to get inside the White House. We got in, but you will not be allowed to take photos on that tour. We got one as soon as we stepped out the door, standing on the porch of the White House. Another couple took our family, and we took theirs, with phones. We were there 2 years ago. Have fun, and enjoy. And welcome to the forum.

Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Smithsonian Castle and Air and Space Museum, White House, Reflecting Pool, Capital Building, to name a few. Day and night shots of all. Go to Arlington National Cemetery and visit JFK's grave, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Changing of the Guard. And that's just a start. It's a great walking city. Walk around and shoot pictures.

If you like flowers, don't miss the Botanical Gardens. If you like animals, the National Zoo offers some great opportunities.

The monuments are good subjects to document your trip. The monuments at night make for more dramatic images. I always liked the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, and for personal reasons the Vietnam Memorial.

Even the Subway stations are pretty photographic.

And, last but not least, the streets are full of people.

You could spend the entire time just photographing monuments. Considering where you're going, you might want to eliminate the word "shoot" from your vocabulary.

http://www.shothotspot.com/ This is a web address where you can type in the name of a location and it pops up a map of things of photographic interest in that location.

Photo ops will be everywhere you go. In addition to what others suggested, don't miss the National Cathedral. It involves a subway ride then a long walk slightly uphill through some beautuful neighbirhoods. The gardens and cathedral are beautiful. Well worth the effort to get there. The walk back is all down hill. 😊 You are also close to the National Zoo if that interests you. We were slightly disappointed in that.

It may be too late, but contact your congressman for a personal private tour of the Capitol building and the Whitehouse.

The changing of the guard in Arlington National Cemetary is interesting. You can also shoot the graves of JFK and others. It is a beautiful, historic place.

Don't forget night time shots of the many memorials. In addition to the Vietnam Memorial, we especially found the Korean War Memorial very beautiful.
Everything around the Mall is beautiful at night.

Not sure how long you will be there, but there is a lot to see and do. Everything worthy of photos. And nearly everything is free.

Enjoy! It really is a national treasure.

That's an easy one. Just follow all the other tourists and copy what they're photographing. D.C. is a great city, you'll run out of time before you run out of subjects.

I have lived in the DC area for over 50 years. The best advice I can give you is not to drive anywhere, there is no parking! Take public transportation, we have a fantastic Metro system. Have fun, be prepared to be searched at various monuments and at displays inside buildings. One way to see everything is to get on a tour bus. Good luck.
