It all depends on how much money you want to spend to begin. You can purchase a used Nikon such as a D200 or D300 for about 2to 3 hundred dollars and have an excellent camera to start with. You will find a lot of sites on the internet. Costco has some great package deals and for the price you cannot go far wrong. I bought my grandaughter a D5500 and she loves it. I have a D7100 and it just comes down to money and what you want to do.

It depends on what type of camera you want, Bridge or DSLR. What type of photography you like, the features, and lastly your budget. Once you decide what you want regarding features, then check out online reviews such as DP and others. Once you have narrowed it down to what you want, check out your local photo shop or Best Buy Store and perhaps see the camera to handle. I will give you some brand names. Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, etc. Refurbished are OK from trusted vendors. I will not recommend to you a specific camera as a beginner. There are so many good ones. I'll let others do that. I already have my cameras and lenses. Good luck.

That's like asking, what model car should I buy when I learn how to drive. There's lots of different model cars out there just like there are cameras. Do you have an idea what model camera you want and how far are you into operating a manual camera? When you answer those questions we can give you a better idea what camera you should consider buying.

I would go to a place like Costco and buy a Canon dslr camera bundle with the two kit lenses that fits your budget. Learn to use that well, then you'll know what else you might need and what direction you are headed in. A new camera is going to work and will have a warranty. Canon makes the most complete system on the planet, that's why it's the #1 rated company! You can't go wrong!!! Buying your first real camera can be bewildering. The Costco bundles are a great value and you can't go wrong.

What is your budget in the first place?
Do you want a walk-about camera? DSLR with inter-changeable lenses? Small lightweight mirror less cameras?

First I want to say welcome. I own two Canons but that is my preference. Nikon also has good cameras. You can find some really good deals on EBay but as others have mentioned it will depend on how much you want to spend. Good luck in your search.

All I can add is to second the suggestions to consider refurbished cameras. I have bought refurbished gear from Adorama, B&H, and Canon, and all of it has worked flawlessly .... for a lot less than new.

Welcome to the Hog !!! Both Canon and Nikon make "beginner" or "entry" level cameras. Canon's are called Rebels. They make several different kinds for all budgets, I would go with the T6i or (if the budget is tight) -> T6 . The T6 will just have less bells and whistles but still good.
If you think Nikon might be your thing - then any of the D3000 (3200, 3300, 3400) cameras or D5000 (5200, 5300) cameras, again all good, but different prices with different features.
Now - if your thinking...."which is better Canon or Nikon" will just search that topic up in the search area -- pages of that will go on and on. Short answer: BOTH.
I like to recommend picking the brand your friends or family might use - so you can ask questions and borrow lenses. This day and age all cameras are good! Just got to find the one you like to use. Good Luck !! keep asking questions

If you don't want to invest a lot of money and still want outstanding glass I may suggest a Sony A77 body mint, in box, on ebay. Or the new Sony A68 for $599.00. I would then suggest you buy a few older Minolta AF lenses which will fit and work on either camera, these can come Mint from ebay also. Example, a 20mm 2.8 Minolta 2.8 lens mint for around 150-200 bucks, a 70-210 zoom for under 100.00, a 50 f1.4 for around 125-160 bucks. Primes include, a 50mm and 100mm micro lenses, both extremely sharp and cheap on ebay Mint. These older Minolta lenses are sharp and deliver a color cast unique to the brand that pro's found intriguing and pleasing over the years. Do some shopping and you can really get some great deals. The nice thing with starting with this system is that if you decide you don't like it ( you won't) you can resale it on ebay and not lose much money.
