Transferring Photos to External Storage Device

My MacBook Pro only has 128 gigs of storage space, so I am in the process of trying to transfer those photos to an external storage device, currently, a thumb drive. While I have managed to successfully do just that, I found that when I pull an image off the thumb drive, I can't edit the photo, just look at it.

My question is, is there a way to load "Photos" software onto an external storage device so I can still process images? Or do I need to use an actual external hard drive and load OS X onto it? Obviously that would force me purchase an Apple hard drive, but so be it if I have to. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Unfortunately, I can't just add more storage to my computer, and I really don't want to have to buy a new computer, although an IMac with a 27" screen and a TB of space is tempting. I'd like to keep things a bit more affordable, though.

Appears that the files are possibly being marked "read only" when transferred to the thumb drive?
I used to have that problem pulling files off of a backup CD. Check the file attributes. I'm not sure how to shot-gun all of them to remove the read only flag.

I don't think they're "read only" files. I'm not sure how that would have happened. I can insert the thumb drive and open it up and bring up an image, but there doesn't seem to be a way to process it. Head scratching going on here.

because it is read-only as stated

Maybe not read-only. I just opened up the thumb drive and pulled a copy of an image onto my desktop, then brought up Affinity Photo and put the image into it. I was able to modify the image there. It appears that I just can't pull an image off the thumb drive and manipulate it as is. I have to put it into a photo program to do anything with it. At least I know if my computer crashes, I won't have lost anything. I still don't know if that is the solution or I am simply not understanding something or I'm doing something wrong here.

Are you saying you were able to 'manipulate' an image before without using a 'photo manipulation' program?

You can probably load and edit the image, but if it won't let you save it?, it's probably read only. Try "save as" and change the name a bit. See if that works.
(You can right click on the file name, select properties, see if read only is checked.)

I will do that. Thanx.

"Photos" in my MacBook Pro is a photo program that allows some degree of post processing, but it's nowhere as comprehensive as Affinity Photo, LR, or some others. What I am getting at is, by accessing an image from the thumb drive, I can double click on it and bring it up on the screen and view it. I can even print it, but I can't do anything else with it, as it doesn't go back into Photos. I think that in order to edit anything in the external drive, I'll have to copy it to Affinity or LR. I may have answered my own question here.

I use a cloud storage system, Carbonite. runs about $60.00 or so a year for as much storage as you can use. I have no trouble retrieving a photo and working on it and putting it back. I have three external storage devices that have failed our of the three that I have purchased. So I won't go that route again.

I've come to the point where I prefer to manually copy my photos to my backup drive. In other words, since I'm using Windows 10, I go to the command prompt and do a copy command. It's a lot easier than using some third party software.

I'm confused, and I don't have any MAC equipment so this may be a dumb question, but are you saying that you are trying to edit/fix a photo without importing it into a PP program? Why?

you are not limited to an apple external drive. google "how to format a drive for apple" and you will learn how to format any drive to be read by mac or pc. transfer your photos to the external drive and you should be able to deal with the photos as if they were on your computer. you may also want to consider lightroom or photoshop for editing, as they are much stronger programs than "photos". you are able to subscribe to lightroom and photoshop for about $10.00 a month and they are well worth the expense.

I have a MacBook Pro also. Because of storage limitations I use 2 external drives. I still use Aperture because of its post processing capabilities. I never used Photo because of its severe limitations. Thus in Aperture or Photos on the Mac I created an external Library for Aperture to my External drive for my photos. Without the drive attached obviously I cannot access my photos. The 2nd drive backs up the complete hard drive on my Mac. So when I download photos from my camera card they go directly to Aperture which stores then in Aperture. I can view then and PP them. I also have Affinity which I Really like but it does not have a storage library capability. So I download a photo from Aperture onto my Desktop and upload it to Affinity.
