Landau Eugene Murphy in West Virginia- Tri-X at EI 1250 in Diafine.

I had the pleasure of seeing this young man sing in Bridgeport, WV last night and boy was I impressed!

He's known for his sinatra but he did equally well with Motown and Prince also.

He's not only a really good entertainer, but a genuine nice guy too. He stuck around to talk and sign things and just shake hands or take pictures.

I shot this with Tri-X at EI 1250 and developed in Diafine. I used Diafine because I wanted to make sure that I didn't blow out any highlights and that things didn't get to contrasty.

I like the results.

I like them! I am so used to assuming digital these days, it is nice to see film work (another benefit of joining the HOG). Did you do any close-ups of the singer as he performed?

No, I didn't even know I could take the camera in until just before it started. Had I realized that he'd be so far back I'd have taken my 105mm lens and gotten a few close ups.

I didn't want to get out of my chair to take any pictures, it was a dinner-show sort of gig...

I understand. Darn those social conventions that say we need to not disturb others enjoyment to get the photos we envision and desire. Do you primarily use film?

I use almost exclusively film. I DO have an old DSLR for taking food shots that I need to send immediately but mostly it's always film.

I just sort of fell into it and fell in love with it. I have a darkroom and folk here on the 'hog and other places have been kind enough to help me by gifting me with gear and supplies. I'm really looking forward to making some prints from these negatives! It's much more enjoyable than scanning.

Back in the early 80s, I was given a Nikon 35mm SLR as a HS graduation gift. In college, I met a photographer who taught me a bit of b&w film developing and I helped out a bit in their darkroom. It would be an adjustment for sure if I used it again, as like most, I am used to immediately "checking" my shot.

Does UHH allow one to "watch" a specific user's posts, or created posts? I would like to see your work when you post it.

Lol...it was an adjustment at first (and I've chimped my film cameras more than once accidentally) but I got used to it. In fact, I like just taking a shot and knowing that it's going to be ok; remember negative film is much more forgiving than digital. When in doubt, overexpose. I got into the habit of pre-setting my exposure before I intended to take a picture so I'm never fiddling with the controls or feeling pressure. If I'm unsure, I just open up an extra stop or two and know that my negatives will be that much more bullet proof and dense!

It is always a trade off, or trade on, really. You get a bit more leeway with the film, which you may need, and with digital, you have less leeway, but you have much quicker access to results. It is that quicker access to results that turned me into a manual shooter. My eyes have become very good light meters and I will have the camera settings "correct" before my eyes ever peer through the viewfinder and see the camera's meter results. I don't think I would have gotten to that point as quickly if I was primarily film. Then again, it does not matter how the exposure gets done correctly, as long as it gets there. (Shooting in Manual is more about my ego, I think, than the results).

Great quality shots with pushed Tri-X. The use of Diafine worked perfect for this situation.

Thanks, that's what I had hoped. I did underexpose the negs and they were tough to print but they came out fine in the end.
