Last night I went to Mt Figueroa at 4500 ft and got above the all the smoke from 15 fires in Calif.
It was a perfect night 3 kn of breeze and 60* My tracking was right on and the scope and mount
behaved very well. I used PHD guiding and my new Celestron 8300 camera on the C 9.25" scope
and CGEM mount. All the smoke over LA helped to cut down the light pollution to the south.
All shots are 10 lights, 10 darks and 10 bias. The Ring Nebula was shot at 10 sec, Lagoon Nebula
120 sec and Swan Nebula 180 sec. I should have shot the Lagoon and Swan at 240 sec. But I
ran out of batteries at 2:30 AM and had to call it quits. I'll know next time. I'm not sure why the
Lagoon has those strange lines through the Nebulosity.

Beautiful Craig!

I wouldn't have a clue about the lagoon nebula. Wind riffles on the surface?
Looks artsey-fartsey. I like it.

Love the detail and the coloring. Looks like the 9.25 and 8300 are really working well for you.
I think you need one of my type all-niter AGM batteries.
Booger to move around. But lasts for dayz.

Were you using a filter for these? (Like an Ha)

If I had to guess about the lines you are seeing, if I'm understanding, they are dust lanes that are more than likely closer to us than the emission nebula so they have not been heated yet to the point of emitting energy like the nebula. Without being able to parallax the nebula it's impossible to say it the gas/dust lanes are just thicker than the surrounding gas and dust or at a different distance.

Very nice images, I would love to see how quickly you could image with a hyperstar on that beast, making it an F/2

For being a really old chip I love my KAF-8300s. Best bang for the buck of any chip I have researched so far. Fairly sensitive and decent size for its price.

By chance do you dither between images to eliminate any noise from always being on the same pixels. A problem I had when tracking was almost perfect.

Exceptional images and great PP,
Matthew

Nice work Craig...

I wish I had some clear weather here... seems like I get 3 or 4 cloudy/rainy days for every clear/partially clear day... I am in a lousy location to do
deep sky photography... local lights, pollution, in a valley about 1 mile from the Ohio river, and overhead trees except for a hole here and there!
I would have to pack up and go somewhere dark and safe on a high hill somewhere on a good seeing night... that combination is rare in these parts!

As far as being safe is concerned, I thought about getting a Concealed-Carry permit but that wouldn't do me any good since I don't have a gun...
I thought about getting a gun but then I thought if I got a gun some young whippersnapper would jump on me before I could get it out and then
beat the hell out of me and then shoot me with my own gun... so I didn't get a gun or Concealed-Carry permit... save me a lot of money though!!!

Hi Sonny thank you very much, I don't use any filters with this color camera it already allows up to I believe around 670 nm.

Thank you very much Matthew I am starting to get an understanding on how to use this camera.
And I hope to get the Hyperstar adapter soon as much for the blinding speed as for the FOV too.
It has a narrow FOV compared to the DSLR's I use also. I believe the IQ is my inadequacy not the Camera.

Inadequacy is the reason we keep our raws. The only issue I see with your images might be color balance, but since the color of DSOs is subjective you go with what you think it should be. I have started looking on flicker to see how others have colored theirs and tweak mine to approximate the images I like.

The hyperstar will vastly increase your field of view, considering the 8300 is roughly the size of a micro4/3 sensor which is only slightly smaller than an crop frame sensor. One plus with your camera is the shape was designed with the hyperstar in mind. Being round it will not leave odd diffractions like my sbig probably would due to its square body.

Thank you very much Bruce for looking in.
Clear skies is always a battle. Summer here on the west coast is a guarantee of marine layer every night. That's why we have to go to the Mountain
to get above it all. Winter is my best seeing from the backyard.

The only color adjustment I made was to increase the saturation.
I think I should have increased the exposure time X 2.

Yes, the fall and winter is best for me too... can see more sky after the leaves fall... also have cleaner,
drier, and steadier air in the winter as long as I don't have to look close to or over a neighbor's house...

Awesome Craig.
You're really getting really good at nebulas. Orion doesn't stand a chance.

There's always the next time.

Being inland about 25 miles, and a bit West of the Mojave Desert, I get a lot of clear skies. (Even the Solar installers said, "Oh yeah, this is Santa Clarita. Lots of sun!)
Now what I'd like is a switch to cause a power outage to darken the place up a bit.

It's cooler at Craig's, but clearer at Sonny's.
