Hi all. From custom key settings (gear Icon) tab #6, AEL Button offers amongs others 4 settings for the
ael button:
Ael hold
Ael toggle, and the puzzle (for me)

square with dot in center AEL hold
" " " " " AEL toggle.

I can't find an explanation in the manual nor in David's Busch/s book.
I've also combed the internet and I can't find an explanation, or I haven't understood....wouldn't be the first time.
Anyway, I'll really appreciate your expertise.

Toggle means you press and release the button to lock (or unlock) the exposure setting. Hold means the exposure setting is held so long as you hold the button down.

My preference is for toggle since I may find other uses for that finger. Toggle can get a little confusing at times, however, you might forget you left it on.

Thank you pecohen. I don't have a problem with "hold and toggle", my problem is to understand what the icon at the left of AEL means. It is a small square with a dot in the center.
And the puzzle is why there are 2 instances of AEL hold/toggle, two "normal" and two with the icon...

According to Gary Friedman's book, the AEL Hold with the dot in the center "switches to Spot Metering mode and locks the current exposure as long as you hold your finger on the assigned button". AEL Toggle does the same thing until you push the button again.
Now the mystery for me is why I would want to use that !
Hope this helps.

Thank you jeffhendy. Now it is clear, and it also beats me why is this feature necessary, or why would anybody need it. Many thanks.

It's used when following is enabled mostly. I use the button for back button focus instead with DMF enabled.
