My version of an unboxing video.
Not a video - Thank God! Those videos have to be the dumbest things ever on youtube. But I'll tell you what, Just like with my Sony A580, my Nikon D750, just as soon as I got it out of the box, I flipped the dial to "M", slipped in a SD card; all before putting in the battery.
It just blows my mind when I hear (looking at exif data also) of these people who buy the new Nikon D500 or the latest Canon mark, spend 5 grand on these things; why on God's green Earth do these guys shoot in auto? They have to be thicker than fudge in a freezer. Why don't they just buy a nice P&S and with the money they save, take their old lady's out to dinner - a whole bunch of times? I bet their pictures would be just as good.
These people also have to be the same ones who ask on UHH what lens or lenses should the bring on a cruise or on vacation somewhere. Just buy the God Damned Point & Shoot with a 6x optical zoom for Christ's sake. The money they will save will pay for the cruise and the results will be the same (I've seen their pictures).
Oh, and because I bought this camera, my wife and I ate at home tonight. We had salmon, squashed sauteed in brown sugar glaze and cut up cantaloupe. It was delicious! And cheap.
Shot with a Sony A77ll @ 2 million ISO blah, blah, blah. I know it is a pretty crappy photo. Perhaps I should have shot in auto, huh?

What you said there Tom was spot on. I have a Bridge camera ..but I rarely use auto (only for a quick shot) One of my walking pals has a top of the range Nikon, and he hasn't a clue how to use it properly (and he has forgotten to take off his lens cap a few times!). I must remember that phrase "thicker than fudge in a freezer" ..although if I told him that he would probably say "well I don't like soft fudge"..lol.

Well, it just seems so funny that there are so many people with more money than sense. Photography is such a great hobby to relax with and enjoy. One does not have to take super great pictures, but if they have a tool that will enhance their product, why not use it to its' fullest extent? If on the other hand, they are mired in mediocrity and are happy that way, then why waste the money? Having the latest and greatest is not going to make one a better photographer if they don't at least try to use those tools to their full extent.
I am not saying that shooting in auto is only for the foolish by any means. Each function on a camera has a reason for being there. That is where learning to use those functions will make one a better photographer. Auto mode has one of the best reasons for being on a camera - children and grandchildren. Kids will do things and make expressions that will change in a blink of an eye, and in those instances, there is no time to fumble with the aperture, shutter speed or the proper ISO. Auto is the only way to go in those cases.
If one thinks that by having a super camera will at least make their pictures turn out a little better even in Auto, they are sadly mistaken for the end result will be an average photo at best; just maybe a little cleaner. Is that worth the expense?
Hey guys! It takes all kinds to make the World go around!
If everybody was supposed to do everything the same way, we would all use the same camera the same way. What cracks me up is how people tend to rant about how other people use their money. Why it would bother you that somebody might buy a couple of D5's to use as book ends in their traler, and a third to shoot weeds through a dirty window is beyond me. It always sound more like jealousy than anything else.
Maybe it would be more productive posting about how they could best use the features they have to improve their photography.
Just sayin'

And they use auto focus as well! Don't they know how to use a focusing ring? I guess it's just easier to let the camera do all the work.

If you know how you can get identical shots in either P,S,A or M mode. It's only easier in M.

Yeah, I was on a rant, wasn't I? MY wife thinks I am super cheap. She may be right. I do save the empty toilet paper spools so I can buy 2 ply toilet paper and roll one ply on to the empty spool so it will last twice as long. I just shelled out 2 grand yesterday for a new camera because my other one is crapping out fast and I am photographing an event today. I stuck with Sony not only because they are a good, quality camera (So are Nikon and Canon), but because I already have 14 A mount lenses for Sony (now 15 because it came bundled). # weeks ago, I bought my wife a new (used) car because her other car was destined for the garage$$$. I wanted to buy her a Cadillac, but she wanted a Toyota (go figure). I paid cash for both of these things, so I can buy whatever I want, basically. But you are right; different strokes for different folks. Lol.
When I put my camera on "Auto", it's great...I open the door and let it out and it comes back a couple hours later with some might fine pictures. And when I put it on "Intelligent Auto" (on the dial, the yellow camera), it came back with some women, so I can't used that setting with my wife around.
Congratulations on your shiny new Sony A77 Mark 2...hope you get years of enjoyment.
P,S,A,M who cares? Autofocus vs manual focus, BFD. I leave it on Program mode most of the time unless I am trying to capture a particular image in a certain way. With RAW, most of the creativity is in post anyway.

Well, for SOME the creativity is in post. For others, the creativity is in how the picture is taken.

It doesn't actually take all kinds, we just have all kinds!

No wonder you picked the camera that delivers the best bang for the bucks.

We all have to do that every once in a while. I think it is supposed to be good for the heart.
