I spent a few hours wondering around the rose garden and cactus garden at Balboa park this morning. In the cactus garden I found this Six Spotted Orb Weaver? and Assassin bug caught up in it's web. The Assassin bug was still alive and kicking about as best it could trying to free itself. Due to time constraints I wasn't able to stay and shot the rest of the process play out, but I'm guessing it didn't end well for the Assassin bug.

Great shots! That's a coreid bug (leaf-footed bug, but one without the expanded hind tibiae)-- assassins have 3-joint beaks, not 4- (last shot shows the 4 pretty well), and more simple wing membranes, among other differences. Guess the nasty smell doesn't bother the spider, or maybe the bug didn't loose it yet.
