Well, this is the last of our Southwest trip. After leaving the Rainbow Vista section of VoF, we stopped at the visitor center briefly where there were some huge succulent bushes (can anyone tell me the name?), and then made the loop around the Arch rock, Poodle rock, and out to the alcoves...where I planted myself on the rock and we had to call it a day. The next-to-last photo was taken by my travel buddy just after I had fallen. He was ready to leave right then but I said that since I was already at the alcove, I intended to get some shots! Hence the final image. What a forbearing gentleman to travel with!

P.S. When you get to the sixth image, it would interesting to hear how many 'heads' you can find! In the boulder at the top of the rock I see a dog with its ears blowing back; immediately below the dog and above the alcove I see an elephant's head with its trunk reaching out; and the rock as a whole looks like a scull--or a hag with a long nose--can't decide which.

Yes--I hope you do! Such a lot to see in a small area and so convenient for flights in and out of Vegas. As you may recall, we did the entire trip starting from Durango,Colorado, to Vegas with 7 days on the road plus the two air travel days.

Diane, your skill is what makes this such an enjoyable series. The composition of the landscapes, the great detail of the closer views of rock formations and even the DOF for the beautiful cactus flowers all add up to a successful presentation. On the nature side, this is a magnificent area. I am amazed at all the little bits of plants and flowers clinging to areas that seem unable to nurture them!

The shots looking out from inside the alcove make me feel like I'm in the belly of the beast and the stalagmites are the legs.

And that really is what it's all about for me...the memories, not only of the scenery, but of the adventure, even the crazy weather! We covered a lot of ground, tried new things photographically, and had a lot of fun in the process. And then I had the pleasure of sharing with my friends on Hedgehog!

Carol, I share your amazement at how fragile survival is for so much of nature, whether plants or rocks. Which makes photographing the intricacies of the rock formations so interesting, just trying to imagaine what created all the colors and striations and overlapping swirls.
It's been so nice sharing exchanges with you on these trip posts and I appreciate all the lovely compliments!

Yay! Isn't that cool?! There's actually a huge rock formation called 'Elephant Rock' at the other end of the park, but I think this rock has a more recognizable elephant head.

The yellow flowers are prickly pear blossoms. Each blossom will last about one day. I have no idea what the white blossoms are in the last picture. Nice series of pictures.
