I have watched with interest the posts from those criticizing the Nikon D5 and those saying that the Sigma 150-600 sport is too heavy to hand hold.
I recently purchased both the camera and lens and decided to test both by shooting with relatively high iso and hand holding. I've had the camera for almost two weeks now and am very satisfied with what I am seeing so far. Great camera and lens.
So there you have it. If you like what you see great. If not and you still want to criticize the camera or lens be my guest. I'm loving the upgrade from a D300 and D300s and a Sigma 150-500. The difference is huge and I am very pleased with the upgrade. I have also ordered a D500 for a backup camera and it is scheduled to arrive early next week. Will test it on rodeo the following week and post the results.
Missing 13-06 at the state track meet
The Class 6A 1,500 meter finals
5A 100 meter finals
Grizzly bears Wildlife Safari in Winston Oregon
Just added this to show how the camera handles difficult focusing issues
Double in state playoff loss
Looks pretty great to me!
Thanks. I think that once a few more people post photos of what the camera can do the doubters may figure out that the camera does what it was designed for really well.
I don't have a D5, probably never will but I do have a Sigma 150-600 Sport (for Canon) and a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary (for Nikon) and although the 6+ pound sport model can be used for handheld shooting, the 4 pound contemporary model is so much easier to use handheld. I can understand why some folks would not want to handhold the sport model, it is fairly large and a bit heavy and not everyone is able to manhandle this lens for an extended period of time, but that's no reason to criticize the lens. The lens works great on a gimbal headed tripod. When I set up on my deck to do some bird photography, I put the 150-600 sport on the tripod with a 5DSr attached. The 150-600 contemporary is mounted to a D7200 for quick handheld shots and for birds in flight I have a 7DII with an EF 100-400L II.
I don't find a problem hand holding the sigma sport lens. My only complaint is that the tripod bracket is too close to the lens barrel. I know there is an after market foot that fixes the problem, but it's too expensive to justify buying. Other than that I love the lens, especially on a big camera it seems to balance very well.
As far as the D5 goes, I think that you are going to see most of the Nikon sports photographers give up and buy one by the end of the summer. It's too much better than the D4s. I stood next to a guy with two D4s at the state track meet and he's already trying to figure out how to justify shelling out another 13,000 to buy a pair of D5s.
Wow, great set of shots.

Superb shots, especially the bears. I just received my new Sigma 150-600C two days ago and am headed out to test drive it today with my Canon 7D MK II and 5D MK II. I only hope my images are half as good as yours. Very nice job!
Wow, those are impressive looking shots, all of them. Track and Field, boxing, gymnastics, and others, are fast action events, therefore needing a great lens, camera, and skilled photographer. I've been to many Track and Field events in past years to observe only, and the action is generally faster than Pro Football. The D5 has been criticized on this forum and other articles as well, while the DX D500 has received nothing but high praise. The D5, taking shots like this, means it will be at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, taking all those fast action events. Your D5 paired well with the Sigma 150-600mm Sports Lens. Thanks for sharing.
Impressive! Your shots as well as your test results. The sports shots are excellent, sharp and showing great action. Totally impressed with your hand-holding skills. When I scrolled to the grizzly bear shot, that is a jaw dropper and looked professional, and so checked out your previous posts, which, I apologize, had not viewed. You have quite a number of remarkable posts,of various genres. I put you in my buddy list so as to not miss any in the future.
Appreciate the kind words carlysue.
