Some Canadians went off the boardwalk at the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone to do some videography so they could post it on HighOnLife. Although the web site did post the video, it was soon taken down because of the public outrage.

These same Canadians were charged by the feds with some charge, seems like there is a need to get people's attention in all of our Parks about Park rules.

Thanks. I didn't want to post the link and have it moved.

The people involved did take down the video right away and apologized for their actions as well as offer to donate $5000 to the park.
What they did was not only stupid because of the potential damage they may have inflicted on the spring but dangerous as well. Luckily they did no damage and no one was hurt.
Now all that needs to be done is to educate the thousands of idiots roaming the park that it isn't appropriate to toss their garbage or lit cigarette butts out the windows of their vehicles as they drive around.

Maybe it is a generational thing, but I was raised to respect rules and to cherish the beauty of our national parks and monuments. I cannot tell you how many times, hiking in the San Gabriel Mts in Southern California, 1 2 to 3 miles into a trail, I see spray painted graffiti on rocks. Why?

Although I am far from advocating that we turn people loose in OUR parks with no rules whatsoever, because I think most of us know how that would turn out, I think that it was funny that the last time I visited Yellowstone, there were many signs dissuading people from veering off the boardwalks since the fragile landscape would be irreparably damaged. These signs were usually surrounded by buffalo hoof prints.

Buffalo hoof prints? That is precisely the point of the signs. Many of the hoof prints made long ago and will be there far into the future. If the occasional bison can leave their mark can you imagine what it would look like if the multitude of visitors were given free rein.

As to those Canadian morons from HighOnLife, apology not accepted. A visit to their website will easily show their lack of respect for the rules at numerous sites they visited and whose antics in some cases left lasting damage. Yes, they took the video down and apologized but only after they realized the flood of bad publicity it had unleashed. The original video even had a scene where they videotaped themselves reading the rules at one of the posted signs before venturing out onto the spring.

Alas idiots abound. A few years back one crashed a drone into the same spring. There is no way to remove it. This year some pitca calf Bison in their vehicle to take it to the rangers. It had to be put down.

Every year several get thumped by Bison for getting too close. Selfie sticks exacerbate the problem.

Sigh.

I hear you. I have a real love/hate feeling about today's era. As a teen in the 60s, I was an avid camper. Couldn't wait for the weekends to get out of the city and into the desert. My buddies and I might be back in some remote location, accomplished with my old VW bug, and not see another person. Today, there are people and 4X4 vehicles everywhere leaving a trail of their trash and crap behind. Forget about going out on 3 day weekends. It's just too much of a zoo out there.

... Luckily they did no damage and no one was hurt.

Actually that isn't true. The footprints they left in the crust will remain for decades, and may even be highlighted by the new micro-organisms that grow in the disturbed area. Frankly, IMHO, no fine is high enough for this blatant disregard for the natural beauty of our NPs and our Historic treasures in general.

There are massive parking lots, hundreds of miles of roads, hotels and walkways and staircases and hundreds and hundreds of camping sites filled to overflowing with massive RV's and people running around everywhere throughout the park. This is not a pristine wilderness park anymore. A few dozen footprints are nothing in the scheme of things. Sure, these people were idiots but in the end they've probably done no more damage than the average moron who tosses his Budweiser can or cigarette butt out his RV window as he drives through the park.

I'm with you. While I'm no biologist, I suspect their full impact will not be known for quite some time.

Stake 'em out; smear them with peanut butter to attract critters; let Yogi Bear and his mates resolve the matter.
