New SIGMA 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art
PRIME IQ WITH ZOOM VERSATILITY Retail for $1099.00

I have the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L USM lens and find it great for shooting outside sports in daylight. Have used it in shooting hockey games in arenas with very poor lighting. I shoot with the Canon 7D mark II and have to bump up the ISO (6400)when using the Canon lens.

I guess that I am looking for better faces in the shots. I have the Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 and wonder if the f/1.8 would make that much more of a difference?

When you mention better faces, do you mean larger, or better IQ? I see a fair amount of noise on the faces which is to be expected with the 7D2 at ISO 6400. If better IQ (less noise) is your goal, then you need to get the ISO down from 6400 closer to 1600, so a faster lens would definitely help there (the 1.8 will give you a bit more than 2 stops), but will 100mm (x the 1.6 "crop factor" ) give you the reach you need? How about the Canon 135mm f2.0L prime for just under $1000 - do you feel you need the zoom capability or a longer reach?

I have the Canon 200mm f/2.8 EF lens and not bad at all from the blue line, up by the face off circles a bit of too much reach but the IQ is good. I want better IQ for sure, some arenas aren't too bad with their lighting, this on stinks and the dark wood roof doesn't help at all.
Thanks for your input, time to ponder the life questions of photography.

dark roof and stinky lighting...hard place to shoot.

You are a sort of dumb ass. If nothing good to say, say nothing. The manners of a pig!

Brooks - you mention having a 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Why aren't you using that? The 24-105 is a fine lens, but short for your distance needs and slow for indoors. The new lens may be faster, but not longer. The 200 f/2.8 prime is a steal used, running less than $600 used at KEH. But, with the zoom already, you probably don't need a prime at the same length.

I notice in most of your shots that the players are well spread out. I've never had any kind of f/1.8 lens, but my suspicion is that at the wide end the shallow DOF will be restrictive.

You are a dumb ass, not just "sort of". There is a difference you probably can not comprehend or appreciate, dummy.
