Last night I took some shots at a fair. I did use a tripod for most of my shots. However, something strange took place when I shot the Ferris Wheel at night. The shot attached is just a snap shot of the effect, but the one that shows what happened the best. I ended up with an odd reflection above the Ferris Wheel. I shot with both a Nikon D90 and a Nikon D5100. However, only the Nikon D5100 produced this effect. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Did you have a filter on the lens? Just wondering if its a reflection, but honestly this is the first one i've ever seen like this.

Looks like a reflection inside the lens, or the filter.

I think you are right. I had a UV filter on and didn't even think about it. Well.... we learn by our mistakes. On the other hand, it's an interesting effect.

Thanks

That reflection , I think is a resullt of the UV filter. UV filters are really uneccesary as most DSLRs have a built in UV filter in front of the sensor.

I had this problem. I was using a cheap UV filter. I ended up paying 90 dollars for a new UV digital filter which has reflective coats and it eliminated the problem. Well, it still will occur on rare occasion.
The reason this happens is that light goes through the lens hits the digital sensor bounces off the reflective service and is reflected off the back side of the UV filter.
When in doubt at night, take the UV off. It still can happen with cheaper lens but usually doesn't.
