Please forgive the title, but it made me happy!
1) find block of wood
2) drill holes
3) steal wife's Sunday school pencils
4) insert pencils in holes to suit
5) steal wife's soft paper
6) wrap to suit
Try it out! Speedlight was about a foot away at full power, the histogram says it is hot. More light than I have ever had, going through six sheets of spaced paper. Add another speedlight on the other side, and things might get interesting!
No PhotoShop on raw image of dirty bee. Used PS to turn color to 8-bit to reduce size.

When you put something between subject and light source the something can act as diffuser, new light source or both. You are diffusing by attrition.
Try the good old Styrofoam meat tray and it will act as a diffused light source. Should increase your light considerably and get rid of color cast.

Stealing? From a Sunday School Teacher?
Piet, I'm not sure about this. Could be some bad Christmas Karma coming your way. 8-)

Better not tell her! I don't want to have to steal that dollar from her.

I'm glad I did this. I've always used paper. I will try what you suggest, I can still use the frame to hang whatever I need in place. Thank you oldtigger.

So far she has always forgiven me, but it might be best to not let her have the sharp pencils back.

more experimentation:
Speedlight from rightside, same distance, same settings. (I know the image sucks, but gotta base-line).
No Christmas dinner, the supplies are rapidly dwindling.
Trying OT approach. Light went through a coffee filter, then one pane of Styrofoam. Have more light than ever before. now I need to play with multi layers and lowering power!!!
Thanks oldtigger!!!

this one was through 4 sheets of Styrofoam, full power. With this setup, am wondering about using glossy print paper for reflection on side opposite flash and roof. Right now it looks like a lot of light is spilling over the top - the light is coming from the right, but hottest spot is on top.
I am liking the framing for ease of use and configuration, can easily add or subtract material. Much to think about.

Forgot to mention; Styrofoam looks white but it transmits orange. Two sheets are pushing it. 4 sheets is less than worthless.

I'm not sure if it holds true for your application or not but, plain paper towels (1 or 2 layers) have given me the best diffusion without killing the light much.

thank you -- it seems a balancing act between too much and too little.
And shape of the material might be a factor too. All my stuff is oddball right now.

Do you mean like the kind you would find in a men's room? The kind that fold in a dispenser? Will have to try some of those. I am liking what I am doing, if for no other reason than the ease of switching things around.
In the meantime, I ran a stack with my normal PS flow for what it is worth.

No, I mean the white ones that come on a roll, generally for kitchen use. Preferably without the little Duckies or Butterflies printed on them.
