I am NOT a portrait photographer but want to learn. I guess I will have to invest in some lights, umbrella's, etc. I know the lighting is not great on these shots, but I love the models (my granddaughters). My son and his wife have 4 beautiful girls and asked me to take their Xmas card shot on Sunday evening. The wife worked during the day so the only time we could get everyone together was at night, which made it difficult for me with lighting. Any comments or suggestions would be great. These are just a couple of individual portraits I did for fun.

Beautiful subject, beautiful set. Nice going!
As an amateur myself, I say they are great shots. Sure, there is some touching-up that can be done,
but I'm sure you'll get that from others. Be proud of both the work and the family, in my opinion, anyway...

Thank you. I think the subjects are beautiful but can't take any credit for that.

Thanks for your comments. I am proud of my family, to be sure. The 4 girls are very well behaved young ladies.

Relatively these are very nice pictures!
Number one thing to learn though... the less bare skin the better. Tell people not to wear shorts, tell them not to wear tops that have no sleeves. That is of course unless the whole idea is a sexy picture, or if the subject is skin (figure photography, as an example).
For portraits bare skin is just a huge distraction. Even bare arms. And not just women but men too. Even older people. The bare skin just attracts attention, and keeps the viewer from seeing the person.
Back when color was difficult, not to mention expensive, BW film was very popular and there was a saying, which isn't wrong, that with color you get a picture of the color of their clothing, with BW you get a picture of their soul. In that respect, because color is ubiquitous today, we have to work much harder and actually think about it to capture the soul of a subject. You might consider bare skin as going in the opposite direction...
I think your lighting is superb. Good job.

Very good points to take into consideration. Thank you. The youngest one had changed into her pajamas so I asked her to take the top down and wrap it around her under her arms for modesty. It wasn't a formal photo shoot, just the wrap up after the family shot. Maybe I should have sent her upstairs to put a shirt on. The older one changed into what she wanted. When I do this again, I will remember.

Thank you, but I think light on the top of the hair would have made it better?

Not better, just another way to present the shot.

Beautiful models indeed...and Apaflo is exactly right about skin, but for some reason I think with a little girl it seems to work in shot #2!!
