At least I think they're Cellar Spiders. They were far from any basements :|
I saw this spider on YouTube the other day, in the spider world book of nasties ( within spiders) this little critter rates as on of the worst, size for size, very fast at spinning a web over and around a larger spider and then going in for kill !!!

Strange old world, here in the South east UK we just call them spiders ?, what we call a "daddy long legs" is the "mosquito" (I believe it's actual name is the crane fly they live in the soil under grass as grubs then emerge as gangly flies ?

This looks like a Cellar Spider which is often confused with the "daddy long legs"-- and as you say in the UK are crane flies. What we in the states generally refer to as the "daddy long legs" is actually the Harvestman-- which is not a spider. Here's more on the subject:
