There are 9 square feet of well lit macro rig which attracts every flying critter in two blocks that the spider could have chosen for its web. So guess where he chose. Judging by the dust, its been there about a week.
Since the lens points down 24/7, I never considered it might need a cover. I'm not paranoid but they are out to get me.
Time to get busy: Don't let the grass grow under your feet and the webs to collect on your lens.

Use it every day but its mounted vertically and i never see it from the glass end.
Strange things happen with that lens. I have not removed the lens from the body once since i bought it in September 2014, but it has 2 dust bunnies, and a few weeks ago, the shutter shredded something that looked as though it may have been a bug.
Probably right... However I recognize the web as a rare man eating spider! Be careful! 😳
