I love it. Brings back many memories of fishing from the old bridge. Walked it from end to end in the 60s and early 70s.

Wish I had pictures instead of memories.

Wow...

You'd walked that far out....We've heard that there are lot of fishes around the old bridge at both ends.

Thx

Saigon, back in the 60/70s there was little traffic down there. The old bridge has the rails from the train used as rails. They hold a fishing rod perfectly. If on the rare occasion two vehicles were going to cross each other where you were you would put your rods on the rail and hng over the rail. Did that maybe a total of 5 times back then. And the fish, you name it they were there. Jewfish (now called Goliath) snapper, cobia, tarpon, etc.

I was born in Miami and finished high school in Homestead, Fl.

After my time in the service I worked as a manager for a company called Lindsley Lumber. When I received a transfer from the Homestead store to the one in Key West I packed my family into the largest UHaul truck available at the time.

The only thing I remember about the drive was the Seven Mile Bridge. I'm guessing that the lanes were not much over 10' wide. So here I am in the middle of the bridge and coming the other way is a Semi-trailer. All I can remember about the encounter is that I moved over as far as I could and closed my eyes. I was sure that the truck mirrors would collide at the very least.

I had also served as a Highway Patrol Auxiliary Trooper for a while. One night we got word of a drunk driving south on the bridge. Three of us piled into a car and took off. I was relegated to the back seat and after seeing the speedometer exceed 100 mph on the Seven Mile Bridge I became obsessed in a thorough search for the seat belt which was wedged down between the seat & back. By the time I found it the chase was over. Never found the drunk. lol

In the 60s and 70s South Florida and the Keys was a fascinating place to live. Sadly, no pictures survive.

Wow,

Silvermeteor....What a fascinating story! By looking at the remnant of the old bridge sections I could imagine how difficult it was for you to maneuver the Uhaul truck on that bridge.

Sorry to hear that you have no pictures from that period.

Thanks for viewing...

My most scary bridge was Bahia Honda. When you went up the hump you lost all concept as to the sides of the bridge. Used to scare the 7734 out of me.
